Need to Replace A Sink's Fresh Water Tank

Hello everyone.

This summer I purchased and have been upgrading a 1989 C-Dory Cruiser 22 feet in length. I am currently working on replacing the plastic fresh water tank (hoses, etc.) that holds water for the sink faucet. The problem is the water tank (as well as the hoses) has considerable mildew inside.

I would appreciate someone replying to this post with the name of a marine supply company or link to a company that manufactures or sells water tanks.

The dimensions of my plastic tank are: 20 5/8 inches by 20 5/8 inches by 11 3/16 inches. It has one 5/8-inch diameter connection on the lower left side (water flows out to the hand pump) and on the upper right side there are two connections. One is 5/8-inch outside diameter for ventilation, and the other is 3 ½- inch outside diameter connection for adding water into the tank.

Moeller and Ronco are two of the long term water tank builders of rotomolded water tanks. Just type in a search engine, "Marine (or boat) Water Tank"

Just because there is some mold in the water tank that is no reason to discard it. There are multiple products which will kill the mold. You can put some glass beads (Like marbles) into the tank and give it some good shaking with anti mold solution (such as in the boat on a trailer towed down the road. Also ice cubes are often used---that way you don't have th fish anything out after you have cleaned the tank. You want re-enforced hose in the appropriate size.

If you want a water heater, then use a 2.5 gallon Bosch tank. It will fit behind the sink in the galley area. But since the 22 lacks a shower, using a "solar"--like Sun Shower--plastic bag to heat the water on deck or heat in the pot and pour into a garden sprayer. some garden sprayers will heat the water adequately if left in the sun for a few hours.

I've removed several tanks from several boats and rvs, mostly potable water, some black tanks. For storage purposes I pour about 1/4 gallon on bleach in them w/some water and let them sit, then go back a week later and rotate, really never paying much attention to the project. However, I've been shocked at how within not much time those tanks look and smell brand new inside! So the point is cleaning may be the best option.

In addition to that, for work we install potable water systems and before connecting to city water need to pass a bacteria test. We do the same thing - we chlorinate or bleach the system to kill all bacteria, which you can then test for.

All that is to say you can clean up those tanks! I bring drinking water in bottles on the boat and just use tank water for cleaning purposes although I would have no reservation drinking my tank water.

It sounds gross, I know. but bake out that tank in chlorine and bleach and before too long that tank will look and smell brand new. If it doesn't work out you haven't shelled out any real money.
 
I agree it is possible to clean all the gunk out of a small tank like that. And yes, you should run some bleach in them every now again to keep the grossness at bay. But I'm not there, maybe it is just beyond saving and leaks some too. Beat me. As Bob said, West Marine can get one. LFS probably can too....for 2/3 the price...at least that's my experience.
 
You might want to try adding 1/4 cup of unscented bleach to the water tank then fill the tank with fresh water, give the foot pump a few stomp’s to get the treated water moving into the system. Let sit over night then siphon the tank and it should be clean, if not repeat the treatment.
Bleach $1.29 or less new water tank $$$$

PS I have done the above for the past 18 years with no I’ll effect’s depending on who you talk to. :lol: :lol:
