need to discuss

I'm about one step away from buying a 19' C-Dory to add to my collection :? I have questions and need to chat with a 19' Dory owner about power and set up. :phone and some other stuff. Any one out there who has a well set up 19 and is happy with the boat?

As my wife is fixating on a Volvo XC70 wagon to relpace "her and the golden retriever's" SUV I am focusing on the CD 19 as fitting within the load limit of the vehicle. I too would like to hear the comments.

We pull our 2007 CD 19 with Honda 90 + Honda 8 kicker (fuel tanks may be full, but very minimal extra weight - just life jackets and stuff like that) with an 04 Honda Pilot and it does very well. From Red Bluff Ca to Grants Pass, OR, then to Crescent City, CA there are some significant mountain grades and twisty roads and the SUV does very well, both uphill and down. And the relatively short wheelbase (compared to 8' crew cab p/u) makes for much easier handling. Towing the boat over that route, we get about 10 mpg. It doesn't take a monster truck to pull a 19' CD.

Happy shopping ---- Marcia

Hi Steve,

I've only had my 19 about a month now but love it. I have Yamaha 75 four stroke. The prop on it was an Alum x 13 x 15. I was only getting wot of 4900 with speed of 25 mph. I just got back from the prop shop where they re-pitched to 13 x 12.787. I'll give that a try and report the results.

I was getting about 4.4 mpg before on a day of running mixed 80% power with some trolling and idle time. WOT mpg of 3.5.

The boat came with the Dolphin fin. I am having a hydrofoil of the oldgrowth design
( http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_ ... _photo.php ) being built as we speak. I should be able to report back on that next week.

Hi Steve,

I'm running a 75hp Yamaha 4 stroke and an 8hp 4stroke kicker. Loaded to the ying yang with two adults up she'll do 27mph tops and cruises nicely at about 23 to 24. She does feel stern heavy and it probably wouldn't hurt to go with the 90.
The Yamaha 90hp 2 stroke is 100lbs lighter. It's easy to tow, I'm use a V6 Toyota 4 Runner, no problem.
Good luck.

Thanks for the responses to my post. I have learned allot talking on the phone to Robbi and by reading replys. I have learned that the 22'er is probably the best of the C-Dorys and most popular. They hold their value well if cared for. For lake cruising and fishing on smaller Serria lakes the 22 can make the lakes very small pretty quick. For one person to handle launching, at anchor and storage it could be difficult but I know those that do a very good job.
I'll be picking up my 2005 19'er tomorrow and repowering with a Honda 90 or Yamaha. Trading in the Honda 75 and the 9.9 kicker. 50 hours on them. The 19 will then be 117lbs lighter aft. I'll maybe try to move the batteries forward. The Dory has trim tabs but I may add the Permatrim as is on my 16'er. They work great. How it will work with trim tabs is a question.
Anyway I'll have more room for me and Sydney than we had in the Gizmo.
Thanks again.

Why, oh why, do that? The Honda BF90A and BF75A motors are identical (just a bit of detuning on the 75 to get it down there). Unless you run over about 4500 rpm you'll never know the difference between the BF90 and BF75 and 75-horsepower is plenty for the CD19. The new Honda BF90D (and the new Hponda BF75D) are slightly lighter (15 pounds) than the "A" models...not enough to change a motor over.

Getting rid of the heavy 9.9 and going a bit lighter would help; getting rid of it altogether even better.

Shoot with only 50 hours on the BF90 it's not even really broken in yet (they get really smooth after a 100 hours and beautiful at 400). I've got cutomers with several THOUSAND hours on the BF90A; it's a great engine.

I'll maybe try to move the batteries forward.

Not really necessary unless they're some godzilla models.

The Dory has trim tabs but I may add the Permatrim as is on my 16'er. They work great. How it will work with trim tabs is a question.

The Permatrim would be a good addition. The main problem with the CD19 hull is lack of planing area aft and the fact that as a percentage of the length of the boat the crew weight and storage is further aft. The Permatrim will work fine with the trim tabs.

I'd say take the kicker off, add the Permatrim, and go boat. I think you'll like it.

All the best...

Glen,

What prop size and pitch are you running? Mine was Solas Alum 3 x 13 x 15. My WOT was 4900 with a speed of 25mph. I had it re-pitched. It is now 3 x 13 x 12.8. I now get WOT of 5600 but speed did not change one iota. I still get 25 mph. I don't really understand that. But I've always considered props as black magic.

Load= CD19, Yamaha 75, 40gal fuel and 180lb capt.

The C-Dory 19 benefits greatly from it's trim tabs and adding a hydrofoil like the Permatrim helps greatly to add more planing area at the stern.

The design, basically the CD-22 hull with three feet removed, is lacking planing surface area at the rear and is imbalanced weight wise.

Get the biggest Permatrim that will fit the anti-ventilation plate and you'll notice a big difference in the handling in the chop (less porpoising) and improvement in planing at low speeds.

Hope this is useful!

I just returned from purchaseing the 19'er you posted from the Redding News about a year or so ago. Thanks

Congratulations Steve!

Are you up to your armpits in snow at home? Sounds like the Sierras have been getting plenty of snow again, according to the national weather. Time for a trip south and to lower elevation to try out the new boat!

We look forward to more details when you get the chance.

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Yeah Steve -- head south to Las Vegas and we can test your boat and go fishing on Lakes Mead and Mohave. Spare bedroom and room in the driveway for overnight enroute to and from the lake. :D

What.. Did you skip dinner last night...
Arm pitts :?: ...nope...over the head  !!!!! :!:
I sure hope I'm not going to be looking for a 22'er the spring of 2009. There just seems to be so much more boat with the 19'er over the 16 and if I can sell Gizmo, I can afford the 19'er. Winter storage is much of the decision. Sydney loves the forward space :) and said I could have the aft deck. Pat doesn't care too much about over the water adventures  unless it was the only way to get to Coach store. :P
Not sure if I will get back to Mexico this winter. The boat Maya will be on the hard down in Mexico after this season. Maybe next year. I'm going to have some fun with the 19'er. I want to do the SF Bay cruise. Back too hook up with Chris at Lake Powell and up to the Bellingham PNW Cruise.
I sure know that you Joan and Molly are have a great winter down there if you can call that weather winter. :thup

Bill
I'll take you up on that invite.. :o How about on the way or way back from Lake Powell in the spring. I'll come by, hook up with you, stay on my boat and we'll take off and check out those lake. :smilep

Steve-

Congratulations on the new boat! I'm sure you'll get hundreds of hours of enjoyment out of it.

The BF90A and BF90D are the old carburetered and the new fuel injected engines.

Here is our best discussions of the new engine:

New Honda lean burn ect. "07"

Cheers!
