Yah, I'm hooked on WOOT.COM and today's special is a good way to step into Road Warrior GPS life. Don't bother to look if it's no longer 8/28/06.

This can tell Charlie how far it is to the next gas station (he needs that capability) and it'll get Joe unlost if he ventures away from Lake Shasta.

For Mike - no, I don't have stock in WOOT.

I haven't tried the Navman unit--notice that it is "Remanufactured"--which may mean there was nothing wrong, or it was rebuilt.

I do like larger screens. I personally use a 5" Lowrance GPS/plotter. That size is large enough to see everything clearly. I use the Create a map, on SD cards.

I would take a good look at "alternate routes", as well as accuracy of cartography before buying. See how visiable the screen is from the drivers seat.

Good luck and enjoy the product.

Actually, I use the Garmin StreetPilot 2620 for serious driving, Bob, and I'm totally satisfied with it - though it can fracture pronunciation on some streets, like Guadalcanal St. All the streets are in the 2620 and you can plan on it or on a laptop without messing with cards.

The Navman is a WOOT special and at $249 would be a handy addition to anyone's vehicle as a casual use item. Plus it's pretty much Charlie Proof.

Yes, it's remanufactured, but if they handle returns like we did in the hard drive industry, it's tested well above normal production testing before shipping out, even if it's simply a return. I personally like refurbs because the instance of infant mortality is far less than that of an off the shelf new box item and one usually gets equal or better warranties.

Caveat, of course, LCD laptops and LCD monitors have to be thoroughly checked for dead pixels since a percentage of returns are due to dead pixels and if the dead count is below their published spec, a careless buyer might discover them too late.
