Navionics for iPad

Charlie,
That is weird because on my 'puter that link takes me direct to Navionics website for mobile devices and it has I-phone, I-pad and Android on the same page

Charlie,
I just dug a little further, having now read Bob's post. The answer for I-pad is to download the US lakes and Marine App. I did this a couple of days ago and you can get all the Navionics charts through Canada to Alaska. I am not interseted in the lakes so I didn't check that bit.

One thing I did note is that when you access it from the I-pad, you need to zoom way in on areas to get the detail charts to download. They show as "greyish" until you do this.
This takes a while and is a bit counter intiuitive but once you have done it they seem to stay there and are in full detail.

hope this helps

On edit. Yes it does show up as HD

FWIW I just called Navionics about the mobile apps. The answer I got was:"They are temporarily gone but will be back" The Navionics rep did not know when however, "It could be today or whenever"

Now that builds confidence!

I haven't done this in a while, but there's some configuration menu where you can drag rectangles over regions you want to preload on the iPad. I drew a few rectangles over the entire west coast, up into BC as well. It spent a few minutes downloading, and now I have those maps available without a data connection.

Just to add to the confusion  My I-pad just automatically downloaded an update to the charts a few minutes ago:beer

Thanks for the tip about getting all the detail charts dowloaded in one go. Too late for me but if I ever want any other area I will try to remember that there is a better way

Well, this is all interesting. I wanted to download and compare this new US Marine and Lakes--mostly for the inland lakes which I did not have. I did have all of the US and most of Canada, plus caribbean all on the I pad. So....to download the US marine and lakes, I had to upgrade to most recent OS for i pad. Somewhere along the way, I lost nearly all of my apps--and since the apps I had from Navionics were not on the app store, I could not reload them. My fault, but they seemed to be backed up. Not so.

The difference is that all of the HD charts of the US Caribbean, Mexico etc were on my I pad, instantly available, and the shoreline was shown initially on Google earth. I have downloaded from I cloud, most of the areas I am interested in. There are "handles" on the down load box, and you can move the area of down load, to near to what you want. Just after that down load, you can move the curser along into adjacent non downloaded areas, and it will down load. It looks as if you zoom down on an area that it will load the detail chart--but apparently from 'the cloud"--not from the computer. As noted above, once down loaded, the charts stay there.

The Lake Powell chart is about equal to my Garmin Lakes chart, and I compared them side by side--both are at full pool for shorelines, so you have to click on contour lines.

I also checked much of the great loop, especially areas I know well, and the charts seem accurate.

Just for giggles I also went to Lake Powell, zoomed in and waited a few seconds and lo and behold I could see for miles
As Bob said, fully detailed map but you need to know how high the water is (momma).

My I-pad is set up to not use the cloud (in theory) but to sync with my computer so I can only assume that it is using my home wi-fi to speak with aliens at either I-tunes or Navionics website.
As I said earlier, it seems like the Navionics App, "pushed" an update notification for me to accept and download.

Now I guess I will go back to I-Books and see if I can get a free copy of 1984.

I've been using these Navionics apps (both iOS and Droid) for a couple years. They started at $4.99 per region, then went to expanded regions for more $$. Seems like every time there is a price increase, the Navionics apps "disappear" from the app store until they come back shortly... at the new (higher) price. There is obviously the demand for these apps, and "supply" is unlimited, unlike having to produce flash-card type charts for the dedicated chartplotters. An update to better work with the higher resolution new iPad? Anyone making bets for the new price?

Grumpy,
My i pad is also set up not to use the i cloud. I suspect that Navionics has a link to the data in the cloud, rather than using a server.

I suspect that I will not get my Caribbean and Central America/Mexico charts back. The US marine goes to the South Coast of Cuba, the Yucatan, about Isla Mejeures and to about PV on the Mexican Mainland, although best detail is available down to Cabo San Lucas.

Bob,

I'm sorry to hear that. I would have words with Apple about it because as a I understand it, anything that you have paid for and downloaded should remain yours, either on your computer via your I-tunes account or on the cloud.
I prefer my laptop as I feel that I have (marginally) better control over it.

I think you must be right about them using the cloud as my computer knows what I have purchased even before I sync my I-pad via the USB.

Good job I have no paranoid tendancies or I would be listening for those big black helicopters...

Hope to see you in FH. We can compare apps.

Wondering how much space the app and download takes. I'd like to put on wife's iPad, but it is 16G wifi pad, and I don't want to overload it. Thanks, Ron

Ron,

I have a 16M I-pad with Navionics plus a load or "stuff" on it and I have used a total of 4M. I did this deliberately because the difference in price between the units does not equate to the difference in price of the storage and is equal to quite a few gallons of gas which I can enjoy.

Depends on how you want to use it. The great benefit of synching your I-pad to either a cloud or your home computer is that you can store a load of goodies and control what you carry on the I-Pad. Only takes minutes to re-arrange it.

The easy way (which Apple marketing loves) is to pay your money up front and go for 64G and take it all with you. Bet you won't use more than 10% of it on any given trip

Here are some of the numbers on down loads:

What I have downloaded on the Navionics, includes entire gulf coast Houston to East Coast of Florida, including Keys and Ochochebee Waterway, the entire Mississippi and Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Tenn river systems, some lakes in Al, Ga and FL, Lake Powell, the S Calif channel islands, San Franscisco to Sacramento and the PNW form Tacoma to inside North end of Vancouver Island including all of the inlets:
555 MB

In comparsion Navimatics (for Active Captain)
Gulf Coast: 361MB
US & CANADA WEST: 647 MB
US & CANADA EAST: 572 MB

WEATHER HD 331 MB
DICTIONARY 141 MB'
HI DEF WEATHER RADAR: 7.3 MB
WUNDER MAP: 526 KB

I did get my Navimatics back for no cost. Same on some weather apps.
The only "loss" is items which Navionics seem no longer to offer.
Also with OS 5, when it seems when I get a new app on the i pad, it appears on the i phone (if available for both).

I had trouble finding the Navionics App for the USA Marine & Lakes several days ago. This evening it did appear in a search in the iTunes store. I purchased and downloaded Marine & Lakes HD for $34.95. It covers Alaska, the lower 48 states, & Hawaii. I didn't need any Canadian charts. The app required iOS4.3 or later. It was 11.5MB and version 2.5.1. It was updated Mar 22, 2012, perhaps that's why I couldn't find it a few days ago.

Thanks all for all the info. I think I'll try it. It'd be nice to have the lakes included. Guess the next thing is to order a bluetooth gps puck. RB

RichardAK with 11.5 MB you cannot have many charts down loaded on the I pad. I would get what you will need (if there are more) while you are near Wi Fi or at least cell service (if you use 3G) because unless you have downloaded the charts in details, you will only have the base map, which is pretty crude. I always get more charts than than I think I will need, since you never know when you might fall over the edge....of the chart.

Thanks Dr. Bob,

I had only loaded the App and not any charts. The 11.5MB was probably the size of the App. Loaded the chart of Prince William Sound and now its available on my iPad. Looks like a pretty neat App.

Just to correct my previous post, my I-pad is of course 16 GB not 16MB  what's in a few BOAT units between friends
I have detail charts from Seattle to Alaska plus other stuff and I have used about 5G total.

Since it backs up to my computer (or I could use that cloud of which we have plenty in the PNW) I imagine I could "park" a load of stuff if I ever had a capacity problem and retrieve it later.
