Navionics app for Android...

I've been reading those "definitely going to another carrier" articles for well over a year. When the big push for the Droid came out and Verizon was hammering AT&T and the iPhone, I figured there was a lot of "bridge burning" going on there. I bought the Droid on the first day they were available. About 6 months ago, I read the "scoop" about the iPhone being made for GSM and CDMA so Verizon would have it. It has become a non-issue for me. Besides a guitar tuner, a bar code scanner, 4 or 5 weather apps, and the snow blower attachment, the only other thing I've been waiting for on the Droid was the Navionics apps. I like it. Droid does. And it doesn't matter much to me anymore which carrier has what. I'm on Verizon. And here in the boonies, the options are: Verizon or nothing.

I am in violent agreement with you about Verizon, and thank John for his comments on AT&T coverage.

I had the first Android, on T-Mobile, because I also like the Google/Open Source philosophy. Changed to Blackberry because when I went to Verizon it was their only phone that would tether my MacBook. When my Blackberry contract is up, I would like to try out the Droid, possibly the iPhone, but whichever one I get must allow me to tether my laptop.

I agree with John's son re: Flash but think it will eventually be a moot point because most everything is now coming out in both Flash and HTML5, thanks to the market share of the iPhone (leaving aside technical arguments pro/con Flash.)

One somewhat minor advantage of the iPhone for me is seamless integration of iCal, Address Book, etc. between it and my other Apple computers (I use The Missing Sync to synchronize my Blackberry.)

One feature of iPhone4 that might be a killer app (for me) is the video chat, if my kids also get iPhone4s, or if it works with iChat.

Warren,

I agree about the 4g iPhone. My middle son is all Apple so for him to say anything negative about an Apple device is rare and significant.

It seems to be a love/hate thing over the iPhone with me. I love the device and the apps and the simple interface, but the lack of service at the farm and traveling is constant pain! AT&T has oversold their ability to deliver services and is now starting to charge everybody for data usage regardless of the contract! They have not invested in the infrastructure to the degree of being capable to deliver what they are selling, so they are penalizing users at every turn now, saying that the users, the "data hogs", are the problem. The problem is that AT&T is very limited in it's ability to handle large data streams, even in metropolitan areas. They will kick you offline at random during busy times.

Most of the new apps require online access so I cannot use them at all or I can't get the info back when out of AT&T service areas. The marina now has Wi Fi so it's not too bad a problem at the slip.

I really like the interface and it has made me seriously consider getting

Lets not give Apple and ATT too much credit here. Its not iPhone 4G, but rather iPhone 4, with 3G coverage. That being said, there will be Android flavor of the month, but only one iPhone!

While we're on the subject, has anyone tried running the Navionics software on an iPad? If it works on it that would make a great backup system.

I've also been trying to get information on getting a single license for Google Earth Enterprise, since the maps are stored locally rather then online. Has anyone tried that?

And, yes, I had plenty of problems with Verizon contracts over the years, but the geographic range of service was amazingly complete.

John, I agree. I think the business office end of Verizon really sucks! They do not seem to understand customer service. I think their technical solutions are much better than ATT, but I doubt that I will ever have another contract with them.

Sorry about getting cut short. My connection is subject to wind and storms here at work and I do have to stop and work now and then...

Anyway, I was thinking about getting an Apple computer and maybe an iPad,, but I am subscribed to continuing education programs out of Boston that are only distributed in Flash... So I cannot even watch it on my iPhone.

I don't know what the real long term answer would be, but I'd be happy if I could get away from the Apple Hitler AT&T connection. During my argument with AT&T and Apple over them cutting off my data service, Apple erased every program on my iPhone except the phone service!!!! They have the power and, in my case, delighted in using it to convince me that they are the BIG DADDY and in charge of everything I might do on an Apple product!

I had paid for programs and subscriptions, and unlimited data services, but Apple still had the right to take away ANY function at ANY time for ANY reason they feel is appropriate from my phone.
