No experience with the Navigon app - how does it differ from the Navionics or the iNavX?

I've been happy with the iPad performance with the Navionics app, no doubt because it looks and feels so much like our Raymarine E-80 chartplotter.

How about some discussion on the Navigon? What you like, don't like?

Um... are these road apps as opposed to marine apps??

Thanks in advance for the discussion.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

I believe that these are road apps. They have been recommended. But my I phone 4s built in maps, and unlimited downloads work quite well. I wonder if these are better for navigation than the Garmin Nuvi? My guess is that they have a bit more detail--especially in the I pad--but do you need I pad connection (I have a 3 gs, but don't have the data download plans)--use a MiFi connection instead..

It looks as if the North America map might be the best "deal"--which I assume includes Canada and Mexico...

Has anyone used these? How do they compare?

Read the customer reviews Apparently bought out by Garmin--and now charging for upgrades!

Yes they are road maps and no you don't (in general) need a connection as the maps are downloaded to the device (you do need a connection to download the initial maps). However the user reviews are not that good as apparently after Garmin bought the company, they've started charging people for maps even though they previously bought a "lifetime" update plan. Here's the first 3 user reviews from the App Store web site

Worst update on the app store

by Emily Williams

Well, with this app being bought out by one of the 'big guns" of navigation, it should have been expected, but nonetheless, when I paid for this app it was with the understanding that the map updates were free for life. Now guess what? They're not...and the new company has the STONES to tout this as a FEATURE on the update description. I've had this app since it came out and was very loyal to it, but once the update came out, I IMMEDIATELY went to the Tom Tom app and so far am much happier. Like the others here I thought my favorites and recents had been wiped out. I stumbled across something that MAY fix it. Put your home address in before restoring or starting over from scratch. That seemed to work for me. I have all my favorites and recents back after that. However, once I get more used to the Tom Tom app, I, like the reviewers before me, will be writing this one off. If you're going to purchase a company, know and honor the best practices agreements they'd had in place with their customers; let ye be run out of business. I work with over 4,000 people that utilize cars to find destinations for their job assignments every day. I will be warning them of the nature of this app as it now stands.
What did you do????

This is the first review I have ever written for an app. I have always used Navigon as my nav app of choice and have raved about it to everyone who has ever asked. I am my local geek so people listen.

Until you fix this last "update" and give me my maps back on my iPhone I will rate you at the bottom of the list. I just got the update and now I can't reach the map server. You have just made it useless. How about if I'm in East Nowhere and need to route myself somewhere on the fly? I guess I just have to accept the "can't reach map servers" and feel good that you have made $100 off me.

BTW, I paid for ALL OF NORTH AMERICA and I want it. On my iPhone. It's MY choice as to how much space I allocate to maps, not yours. Make it an option if you want, but I want my maps back.

I will be recommending another nav app in the future until you change it back.

What's next Garmin, charging me for map downloads on an app I already paid to get ALL the maps? Hmmm??? Me smells a rat in the barn.
I was just robbed

I bought Navigon when it first came out for $89. It promised free map upgrades; something it always provided until Garmin bought them. Now, I have to pay $15 per year to get back something I already had. I guess it's time to put CoPilot back on my device. Charging for something that used to be included is sleazy. This, Garmin, is why your original app failed. Now you've set out to ruin Navigon as well. Thanks for nothing.
