NADA Guides

Hi Harry,

Do a search here and you'll find MANY discussions of the inaccuracy of the NADA prices on C-Dorys. Simply not enough data (since most boats are sold by their owners) and the formula that NADA uses to calculate depreciation (that really doesn't apply to a hull like the C-Dory).

NADA just keeps folks from getting their previously owned boats financed . Its fairly useless for C Dorys . Great for Bayliners though..............

I looked up a 25 C-Dory in the NADA guide. With a bunch of common accessories, it came back at $52,000 as the AVERAGE price. Now, there was a note that an asterisk after the boat type meant that the outboard was included. No asterisk, so add $10,000. Also, most 25's come with a trailer, add $8,000. Total $70,000.

Now look at the 2006 C-25 in the For Sale section: $73,000. Comes with an inflatable and generator. Doesn't say if it has a trailer, but if it does, the price is in line with the NADA estimate. In fact it's only average.

What am I missing?

You're right, the NADA guides are OK for a nearly new boat!

They discount the value about 20% for the second year, and 7% or so per year thereafter, giving a boat-life of about 15 years.

There are two problems with this system:

1. After five or so years, boat condition is more important than age, and

2. Some boats have a life of 10 years or so, others 30 years or longer.

My 1987 CD-22 Cruiser low books at $4120, average is $4660.

With a 2005 Yamaha 90 EFI and the trailer, we get a low-average range of about $12-13.5K, about half the value determined by looking at our archived ads.

Conclusion: NADA value = 50% of market value! (For this older boat.)

No wonder buyers of a used C-Dory have to get the banks to look at our archived ads instead the NADA book!

NADA claims to research actual resale prices, but has anyone ever been asked?

Adeline comes in at $5250.00 average retail. If I could actually buy her for that I'd get a fleet of them and keep one moored at each of my favorite boating areas. One at Lake Powell, Tahoe, Tillamook Bay, Newport, the Sound,... BTW, if you should lose your boat somehow(sinking) your insurance company is likely to use Nada or Buc or some other guide to establish fair market value. Might be time to have a talk with your insurance agents about this.
 
I certainly agree, in old(er) cars as in boats, the condition of the vehicle is what's important. And when they get old enough the value goes up, apparently. Now does that apply to women too?

As to a happy Sat night, Michigan lost, so a son-in-law is disgusted; UCLA lost, I'm somewhat disgusted; now if USC loses, I don't know, Dad went to Cal, a daughter to USC. None of us played any sports, so I'll be happy I have a C-Dory. Figure that rationale out.

For the most part the C Dory prices in NADA are way low--if you look at the 2006 Tom Cat 255 (with *, which means engines)--it is $55900 with out "accessories". With the "usual" accessories, this comes in at $61,665.

I think that your cost estimate for a CD 25 trailer is a bit on the high side-especially for a used one.

The CD 22 gets even worse--the 1992 comes in at about $6,130. (I assume that this includes the engine--but if it didn't this would only add $2500 for a 1999 90 hp Evinrude.

The NADA data base comes from sales, and formulas--but so few of the CD are sold by dealers that the data base is very low--and that is another reason for the in-accuracy.

I do know that certain RV values fly in the face of NADA prices just like C-Dory does. Most late model Class C RV's are built on the venerable E450 Ford chassis. NADA simply applies depreciation across the board just like they do with boats but again, there are exceptions. The Lazy Daze Class C is an excellent example and, like the Brats, their online owner group keeps excellent records of selling prices. Lazy Daze sell used at a significantly higher price than any of the other brands and older, "classic" versions are lovingly restored.

The comparison between LD owners and C-Dory owners gets better. I recently went to a LD "gathering" where some 60+ owners met for a weekend of BS. Sounds familiar? They had expected many more but it was the week of the So Cal fires. The Santa Barbara gathering usually ends up with over 200 rigs, and over 300 isn't that unusual I'm told. All factory supported, btw. 10 "organized gatherings" per year and that's just the factory supported club. Pacific Northwest has their own group as do several other areas of the country.

So is your trailer fairly priced by NADA? If it's an easily obtained late model from one of the major manufacturers, maybe. If it's an older model or one that gets five stars from the RV Consumer Group like Lazy Daze and precious few others, probably not.

As always, my opinion is worth precisely what you paid for it. :wink:

The NADA are a base line to "go from" But with any sale--a willing buyer and a willing seller rule. We have bought and sold RV's--and used the NADA as a pricing basis (as we have for relitatively new, stock boats)--but it ends up what the demand for the unit is. We had a diesel pusher--no slides, the Cummins 190, tweeked to 200. No one was really interested. They wanted slide outs and the 275 hp engine. So we ended up accepting a smaller unit as trade in and taking less than we had anticipated...
 
Harry- NADA is a crock....... Despite the web site that states -

"NADAguides.com is committed to providing consumers with the most comprehensive and market-reflective vehicle information available today."

Something stinks with that statement.

It clearly does not reflect accurately the value or current prices of used C-Dorys. Makes me wonder what else is misrepresented in that "guide". You will have to do your homework.
