must haves for the day you take delivery

What are things you must have the day you bring the boat home? These are my items:

  • two motors (be it a big main + kicker, or twins)
    VHF
    GPS/Fish finder
    Down Riggers
    Working Stove/Heater combo
    Tandem Axle
    Anchor

items I'd like to have but not a deal breaker as I can pick it up myself:

  • Radar
    Stereo
    Sink (going to happen anyways)
    General Safety gear (vests, signaling, etc) is nice
    Bumpers/rope/etc


anything else you can think of on the day you take it home? my list is based upon the activities I plan to do, and knowing myself, I know certain things are better to have initially because I'm not going to want to drop the $$ on them later.

oops, yes Anchor is good. The boat i'm looking at has that as well. at least it shows one in the picture.

And the smile comes back every day as I read of your travels and look at the pictures. next on the list;

  • a grand adventure or two. (I will supply!)

This is just a quick list of the little stuff people dont think about before heading out. Cant tell you the number of people I have met that dont own a anchor for their boat because" well just go out for the day" . Its like people that go for a hike with with out a pack with three days gear in it because " we are just going for the day".
food water heat and a space blanket. I dont know how many people would be alive today if they had just had a 5 lb pack with this stuff in it. Same goes for boats.
 
for me it all depends on price. as long as its a good price match for items included.

must have.
solid hull, transom, floor. structure things. decent to good gel coat.

the rest I can/like to do. Rigging boats and setting them up I enjoy doing. plus then I get to pick everything out that I want. Like power,electronics, Radio,and radar.

to me I would prefer a boat with little to nothing done to it and as few of holes as possible from previous owner. Also I don't think I would buy new either, better deals out there in the used market. especially with the economy how it is.

I have a boat checklist from boatus.org as well that I plan to keep on the boat. it will cover many of those things. one of my bigger concerns are things that will cost more money than I will want to spend down the road. Downriggers for instance I know are going to run me $600ea+ install if they aren't already on the boat. Tandem axle trailer, another big upgrade.


still... glad you shared. it keeps me thinking about some very important items there, like the ditch bag, etc. I will need to develop a wise tool box as well. I did that when built a lowrider years ago, never knowing where'd i'd break down (haha). and for my '61 chevy c10.

Good points! Right now I'm looking at a 22' CD, year 2000.
 
Maybe this is morphing the thread too much (?), but it's what I looked for to "bring home." I expected (wanted) to change the boat to suit me after getting it home though.

I'm a bit more in Jake's camp. I looked for a 22 that was as un-modified as possible, with as little equipment and as little use as possible. I knew I would want to improve things my way, and I figured that as part of the process I'd rather add new things than "un-and-then-re-install" older pieces that were other people's choices. I preferred the non-built-in cockpit sole.

I found what I was looking for with a 2002 22 that had been stored indoors, had only 50 hours on it, and was pretty much bone stock (didn't even have trim tabs). So that made me happy and now I'm busily making it suit what I want, which is a boat capable of comfortably trailering long distances and being used on a wide variety of waters. Of course other people would want different things and have different plans. I did also consider buying a nearly new boat that was all outfitted already. That could also have been a nice choice (well, most C-Dorys would be, after all :D).

I would want one with a camper back canvas already on it. These can cost a lot to get done. Good thing about getting done though is you get to decide how its done. other then that and the items you mentioned I cant think of any other big ticket items.

what down riggers are you thinking about? Consider Cannons. I have used them all and like the cannons the best followed by penns.

there are brands others than Scotty?! I honestly only have experience with Scottys, but thanks for the tip, I'll look into Cannons and Penns as well.


I haven't even seen a dory with the camper back already on it for sale, but I have been pricing them out. Those are a very cool option and one that I think we will particularly like on eastern washington camping trips.
 
All the major brands of electric downriggers are good IMO especially when your looking around the $500 price range new.

We upgraded the Cannon Mag 5 riggers to new Scotty 1106s this fall and Im very satisified with the improvement
 
I also am a fan of scotty, and if you are going to be buying new I would get the new high power ones. We currently have electric scottys and will be upgrading to the new high power ones in the next year or so.
 
You are required to have the safety gear--and that should be at the top of your list before you take the boat out. Many of the safety items you will buy yourself.

The same may be true for electronics. Many of the boats will come with older electronics--and you have to decide if you want to settle for those, or want the latest greatest toys. There are some real advances in fish finders in the last two or so years, and Radars in the last several years. Also you want the latest available soft ware and chart updates.

Many of the boats are available with camper canvas etc--so as you look at the cost of the boat--add in what each item will cost you to buy when you bring the boat home. Also consider if you want to upgrade from what is there--if you can use the chart plotter, yet want a better fish finder with CHIRP or Down scan/ broadband, structure scan etc.
 
Agree with Boris - every used boat I have ever bought has needed something - no matter how perfect a picture the seller painted.

Another thing if you are trading in - make sure you have the ownership for the trade in. The morning I was going to pick up our new Stingray - I hooked up the Campion(trade in) and I was so sure that the ownership was in the glove box of my truck that I didn't even look for it. A last minute check turned up no sign of it. The trade in value that I was to receive ended up having to go on my credit card for over a month untill a lost ownership replacement arrived.
