Most boats have an inch and a half of balsa core between the hull bottom and cockpit floor FG skins. If you have a later boat with the flat floor in the cockpit, there is a void between the inside of the flat floor and the top hull skin.

The hull sides are solid FG about 3/8 inch thick.

If it were my boat I would not be using lag bolts for this application. Mounting something that is going to have good load on it will require through drilling, a backing plate, and fastening with nuts and bolts.

My boat does have a few lag bolts on it. But these are used for loads that are only in compression (i.e. not pulling on the bolts).

Another way to secure an item to a floor or side of the C Dory (I agree not to use lag bolts!) is to either epoxy or 5200 a block of wood (like teak or Iroko) PVG lumber or Coosa board are alternatives. When using any glue or adhesive, which takes time to cure, I hold the piece in place with hot glue until the adhesive cures. You can put a "T" nut or threaded insert on the back side of the board, and then run a bolt into that, given you a good strong area for the foot of the hauler.

Take it back and get the Scotty. Small, light, powerful albeit a bit slower than the commercial one but the Scotty plugs into a downrigger mount. Customer service is top notch. I've pulled up large shrimp pots offshore in 600' with 900' of line plus anchors. No problems.

Another way to mount your puller is by using a Burnewiin mount with a Scotty Swivel Mount. We have used this to pull crab pots that were full and very heavy. We also use the same Burnewiin and a Scotty Swivel Mount for our electric downrigger pulling a 15 lb. ball with no problems.

You do not want to LAG bolt a puller!

IMHO tsturm's install is the way to go. I have personally seen an entire scotty mount fail, along with a sizable chunk of the fiber glass it was mounted to.
