Mooring on Catalina

CDory23,
We are over at Catalina most weekends. I would be happy to point you in the right direction for fishing and diving, if you want to PM me. We prefer the moorings at the other end of the island, with Emerald Bay and Howlands Landing being our two favorite spots. The mooring set ups are the same all over the island and I am sure you will have an excellent time.

Since many have mentioned the bridge closure at Sunset Aquatic, I figure I would chime in about this one as well, since we keep our 24' Tomcat on the J Dock at this marina. The whole thing has been a mess and we have decided to move our boat to Cabrillo Marina in San Pedro. It has the added advantage of being a few miles closer to the West End of Catalina, where we spend most of our time. Fuel is a bit cheaper over there as well at the commercial dock.

Last week I attempted to get to my boat on Sunday, only to find out it was closed to all foot traffic as well. I ended up swimming to my boat and moving it over to Cabrillo Marina on the same day. We use the boat so often that I can't stomach not using it for a few weeks. My trailer is still "trapped" over there and I guess I will (quite literally) "cross that bridge when we come to it."

As Bluechablis noted, Cabrillo Way Marina Dry storage is a good option as well. We may do that in the future, but for the time being like having it in the water full time.

Good luck

I drove down to the bridge which is closed:

As you can see it is a wooding piling bridge, with a metal deck and concrete asphalt overlay. This deck was redone in 2007 for a cost of almost 8 million dollars. It took several years to get the permit for this last "restoration"

During the 3 plus months we have been here, the Navy has been dredging the flood control channel (Anaheim Barber Channel) which runs between Edinger Street and Sunset Aquatic park and the Seal Beach Naval Weapons stations (Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge/Anaheim Bay Natural Wildlife Refuge --all on Anaheim Bay/Huntington Harbor). This is called the "Sunset Gap" drainage basin.

This bridge closure seemed co-incidence with the drag line dredge project reaching by this bridge on Edinger last week. I don't know what effect this dredging had, but the closure of the bridge was sudden, and not publicized! (As Boris found out).

The Army Corp of Engineers, or the Navy Sea Bees could have put a temporary bridge over this short area in less than 24 hours…but this is California, and I suspect it will be both very expensive, and a long process. We were thinking of bringing the C Dory with us when we come out again in July. But the closure of this bridge, seems to mitigate against our being able to use this marina or launch ramp in the foreseeable future. I'll give a phone call to the Marina in the next day and find out what the plan is..if any.
