Hi Brats,

A while back, there was some discussion about models of a C-Dory. On a sailing forum I participate on, one of the participants builds models. I have no connection with this enterprise, other than being a fan of the high quality work he does...

These are not inexpensive, but they are NICE. Todd handcrafts each model. He does half-hulls, detailed half hulls, and full models. Figure $50/inch, with a $1200 minimum for a full model... but, it will look just like your boat, right down to the details, including the font style on the name.

At $50/inch, I can get a full size model C-Dory 22 for......

$13,200.
Sounds like a bargain priced way to get a new CD 22. :wink:
 
I just looked around his site and the man is a artist. My favorite quote is " I spent the morning making this anchor. its fully functional and works like the real thing".

There is an opportunity there for someone to semi-mass-produce half-hulls of the 22, on a plaque with room below for a brass plate with the name of the boat, etc.

I agree with Warren. Great opportunity to do half hulls. Easiest to build a mold--a full hull is considerably more complex. I have a really nice 10" pulling boat (pretty much looks like a "fatty Knees"--which a friend made a mold for and pulled a dozen hulls off of. He did teak railing, nice seats etc--and gave them away to his good friends. Cost was only a few dollars once the mold was made.

Not a bad idea, Roger!

As I'm sure you know, the price of boats goes up more in proportion to their surface and volume, than with their length, because of the cost of the materials and labor to assemble the more intricate details and workings inside.

A 100 ft yacht (1200 inches), would, at $50 a foot, cost only $60,000, not several million, as it does. Buy several, sell all but one, and have a free yacht + lots of money left over!

The Navy could buy an 1000 ft aircraft carrier for $600,000 , instead of $4.5 billion, a savings of 99.98667%!!! Let's build another 13 and really rule the waves for cheap! No?

I guess another way to look at it is that a $20,0000 CD16 costs $104/inch, a $55,000 CD-22 costs $208/inch and a $110,000 25.5 TomCat costs about $359/inch. So the models are cheap by comparison.

Also the 24 inches Oldgrowth Dave added are worth about $2400-$3000. I bet he doesn't want to provide the actual cost/inch for that modification! (but dang it came out nice).
 
My Great Uncle was a naval draftsman and eventualy worked his way up to being Superintendant of construction of William Astors 232' yacht the Nourmahal. On completion as a gift Astor gave my Uncle a 16' scale model of the Nourmahal. As a kid when we would go to visit you couldn't get me away from the model. He kept it in his basement and eventually donated it to a yacht club in Annapolis. I shutter to think what that thing cost to build.
