Happy New Year. Now is the time to plan trips for 2011. So,

Does anybody know of cruising guides for the upper Mississippi (down to Cairo) as well as the Ohio?

What I would like is a list of marinas, public docks, good anchorages, fuel docks, etc. I have the Core of Engineers charts, and they give the markers, locks and distances.

Looked at Quimbys, but that only seems to treat the Miss River as part of the Great Loop. I assume that means it doesn't go above the Illinois River, etc.

Boris

PS, winter is here was down to 38 this morn, frost on the car and grass.

My Quimby's goes all the way up to Minneapolis.

The Minnesota DNR will send you a free set of Mississippi River maps that are quite detailed that cover all of the river in Minnesota, starting at the source, Lake Itasca.

My 2000 Quimby's covers all of the rivers. The Waterway Guide of Great Lakes has some of the Great Loop, but not much else. Active Captain has a lot of information of the inland waterways, but does not seem to be available for the Navimatics i pad/i phone application (or Garmin) for these inland waters. If you are using the computer, then Active Captain can give you a lot of information--and more up to date than any of the guides. For example around Alton Missouri it gives several marinas, as well as an anchorage. You will probably have to follow up the river system, and then print out the information, or use a live view.

You probably have already found resources by google search such as:
http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/education_ ... _guide.pdf Which is a guide to the upper Mississippi of 131 pages in PDF format. Ohio River has a single page: http://www.ohioriverway.org/assets/Water_Trail_Map.pdf

I have the complete older Skipper Bob series (and these are now owned by WaterMark--who publishes the Waterway guides--and may be updated--I;ll check these for comments on the upper reaches. Also blogs of people who have done this in their boats may also be of value.
