Miles per gallon while towing 22' C-Dory

I tow my 22 with a Ford Sportrac and their V8 engine. It gets a lowsy 9mpg towing and a lowsy 14-15 not towing. It rides nice though. My dad towed my boat with a Chevy Diesel and camper and got 14 mpg. It probably always gets 14.

I'm surprised at a few of the above smaller vehicles getting 12 mpg towing but not all c-dory's are equal. It's easy to accumulate 100's of pounds in gear. Last time I weighed mine partially loaded it was 4300 lbs.

I should qualify my towing mpg usually includes a trip over the coast range. Approximately 2000 feet. I'm sure if I was towing highway only and traffic never stopped my milage would be much better.

Jazzmanic,

Although the majority of our towing was with a Class A motor home--we kept the CD 22 in Las Vegas, and towed it to Long Beach CA and back over the Cajon pass with no problems. On another trip, we went thru Zion park, and it turned out that the CD and RV were too long for the tunnel. Marie was driving the Honda Pilot and we unhitched the RV and towed the CD to Powell with the Pilot. We also have towed the CD 22 to Crystal Lake in the Olympic Range, from Sequim with 4 big adults in the Pilot, with no problems. The Pilot has AWD and lock in low range--usually we don't have to engage the AWD. We always used the pilot for launching the CD 22.

On our recent trip from Wyoming to Skagway and back via California averaged 13.9 mpg over 5835 miles. That was with the mokai on a 2006 l ton dually crew cab duramax pulling the 22' c-dory.

The pick up is definitely overkill for the c-dory. Have it due to plans for it to carry a camper pulling the c-dory in the future.

I agree with Marc with a diesel it is all about speed for going up or down in mpg. His mpg quotes for varying speed is a very close match to ours.

Our 2003 crew cab 2500 had 60 less horse power and averaged close to 2 mpg better then the 2006. Wished the new pickup had the old motor. Never lacked for power in the 2003.

The 2 mpg difference is when not towing. On our 2003 and 2004 northern trips we averaged 15 mpg towing the c-dory with 2003 the pick up.
