Memory Map

This looks interesting to me (and, I just got an iPad recently, so I can now "do" apps!), but... I'm slightly confused about it. Maybe it's more obvious to someone else here. (I did read the Panbo entry and look over the MM website.)

My question is.... what charts does one need to use it, and where/how do you get them? It looks to me like the free version just uses some maps that MM provides, and then for $50 you can put in many of your own maps/topo maps/charts. That sounds cool and I wouldn't mind paying for it at all. But... what charts? I read the formats and things but that doesn't tell my newb self what it actually "means" in the real world. If anyone else gets it, and can explain it to me, I would be appreciative.

If it also works for land topo maps for hiking and looking over back roads and things... extra cool!
 
I have not used "memory Maps"--I am also not clear on their pricing policy--and how often you need to pay up upgrade. Also I don't see Active Captain, which is a great aid in any mapping program.

There are a number of other programs which provide free or minimal marine charts or Topo maps. Topo maps are good for Powell (or other lakes which fluctuate,), since you are not dependent on someone's idea of where the water level is (often depicted at full pool, which is rarely the case.

I have been fooling around with Skipper recently--which has multiple type of maps, NOAA, Topo, satellite, road, history etc. And is about $12 a year for all of the upgrades. It seems to be the only one which has Active Captain on Powell, and I am going to put some of my favorite places on the charts. With Topo it is fairly easy to ID where you were at what pool level.
 
A couple of maps options, one is in-app method where some are free and a try it for 10 days before purchasing from the Digital Map Shop. You are buying a license and the map is downloaded to the device and does not need an Internet connection to use. If you need to re install it, just go to your account to access it... to me, is like an Audible account, where your books are always available with an internet connection and don't need to keep all of them on your device or like my Garmin chartplotter where a base map is included and you add purchased map

I think I get that part (and I like programs that do not require Internet access when you are using them). What I don't understand - even after reading the site - is where you get the marine charts that you use with it. Are these NOAA charts? Where/how does one get them? And/or where am I missing this in their documentation (I'm sure it's just me, but I don't "get" it yet).

The web page for Memory Map says it has maps (charts?) for Canada. Has anybody downloaded a Canadian chart? That would be a big bonus and worth the price. Their web site seems to show maps and they refer to selecting a whole state. What does one get?

All NOAA charts are free and there is no yearly version; they're released as soon as they're updated. There's both raster and vector. Here's the link to their site: http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/staff/chartspubs.html. Does Memory Map do any post-processing?

I dont know but the more I use it the less I like it
