Maximum amount of anchor line and chain on tomcat

Probably, the maximal amount that fits into the anchor locker
with the chain:rode ratio varying.

For me, the most "useful amount" trumps (sorry) the "maximal
amount".

Aye.

Depends on the line. You can fit more braided line in the same spece that 3 strand line. So if you're trying for 600 ft as in your other post, go for braid.

Not sure why you are trying to avoid using a windlass, but even so, since you have one, you should be sure your rode (anchor line) is compatible with your windlass.

I just ran into that this spring thinking I would go to a braided line instead of my 3 strand nylon, to be able to get more line on board, but it would not work in the windlass, so skipped that very expensive little foopaw

Using 1/2" Brait (8 plait) you should be able to get at least 400, and maybe 500 feet, along with 30 feet of 1/4" HT chain. (which will work with the Lewmar 700 windlass). The issue with a windlass is the amount of distance of "fall" so the windlass will self tail. To max out the amount of line, you may have to spread it around in the anchor locker as the line comes in.

There are two other options: One is to use 3/8" Brait. That way you can get over 500" in the locker. New England Ropes gives the "strength" at 4000 lbs. Should be enough for 99% of anchoring conditions--the other 1% you probably should not be out there. I have used 3/8" double braid rode on a 45 foot racing sailboat, with displace end of about 27,000#. I also used that same rode as an stern anchor and kedge for a 62 foot/65,000 lb motorsailer.

The other option, is to bore a good size hole between one of the side lockers, and take several hundred feet of the primary rode to that locker by hand. It will be rare than you are anchoring in over 100 feet. Also consider anchors which do well with very short rides--such as the Boss or Ronca.

The first 100' will pile up until it jams the windless. You lay on the berth, open the hatch and spread out the coils until there is clearance. Clear the jam, wind in another 100' or so and repeat the process.

We have 400' of 1/2" three twist rode and 65' of chain. We almost never anchor deeper than 60' if we can help it, and let out as little rode as we feel safe with for the wind and current conditions.

You could put 600' or more of rode in the locker, but it would be a three person operation to retrieve it in a timely fashion. We try to have someone (Dixie) on the bow to watch the rode come in and direct the boat maneuvering. That leaves me to run the windless maneuver the boat and clear any windless jams. If we had 600' of rode out, someone would have to lay in the berth and supervise the coils as the came into the locker.

The TomCat 255 locker is too shallow to use a lot of rode with a vertical windless. A horizontal windless mounted on the deck would be a better solution.
