whadda ya think ?

I'm trying to put together a class here at the college that would be prepare one for a glorious career as a charter boat deckhand.
The class would consist of some classroom time covering topics such as basic angling techniques, safety, first aid/cpr, seamanship, boat maintenance & lodge practices/customer service. There would be a healthy hands-on lab portion of the course which would consist of the student working their arse off for the summer...the lab fee would be about the same as a multi-day stay at a lodge and cover room, board & air fare.

the school boss is keen on the plan & the fish boss loves it, Gots to do some digging for answers on issues such as liability and having a lengthy lab out of state.

thanks for your input

I think that's a great idea, Ken. Especially if you can include a healthy portion of boat and dockline handling. They would come into the job "pre-trained" - perhaps the management would offer them a better base pay as a result. It would certainly save manhours in on-the-job training. Plus, you could "recruit" from the top of the class. :thup

Best wishes,
Jim

In California you would need to offer two classes....one lecture/lab and one work study..... (supervised and non-supervised) for the insurance coverage.... work study classes have a special classification so the college is not liable.
I can't imagine any problems offering a class off-site (ie. out of state) as long as supervised...... we do that often with language, travel and history
classes.

Great idea and the thoughts of the others above are good additions. Let us know how it works out. Might want to contact local CG Aux, Power Squadron and/or other boating safety organizations for some additional ideas.

Ken-
It sounds to me like you are looking for slave labor to keep from getting your hands dirty and fishy during your summer gig.

damn it Larry, you're blowing my cover....actually that's how the idea started, the thought of free help....good ideas & info, keep'um coming.

later

That's an all-American idea there, Ken. After you get the state of Washington to pay for your help and you spend all of his tips maybe you can get Washington DC to give you a bailout.

hummm.....bailout......I'd better ponder on that one......if the porn industry is asking for a bailout..... :idea get porn stars as deckhands

I did some digging for answers, this is looking more doable

Other topics should include:

Cutting bait, hauling guts, boat cleaning, pulling anchor, grovelling for tips, dealing with the captain, and last but not least, taxes.

waxing, sucking up to the Capt & customers, good stuff.

I'm thinking a chunk of classroom time to get some tools in the mental tool box and, to weed out any total flakes. Below is what I'm thinking for curriculum so far:

Intro-overview of program, required clothes, equipment & documents

Safety- First Aid/CPR, Marine safety, outdoor/fishing safety

Seamanship- boat handling, rules of the road, basic chart reading, tides & currents, basic vessel maintenance

Angling- marine species & habitat, knots, fishing gear, basic angling techniques, rules and regulations, ethics

Lodge operations- customer service, fish processing

If I can drag in somebody from the CG Aux. and some equipment manufactures it would be great.

with tips, the class would probably end up being a free AK adventure for the student.

more input-
