Mardi Gras on the Water...

If there is a shortage of boats cruising some anchorages, there certainly is none here in NE Oklahoma on Grand Lake 'O the Cherokees. In fact, maybe all those missing boats were here last nite.

The main lake body is about 70 miles North to South and the shores have been lit with fireworks every night from about 9-12pm ( I crash by then - some continued after that).

Last night was the big celebration at Pioneer Yacht Club on Duck Creek. Imagine a mile and half of boats tightly rafted together from the morning til after midnight. Then quite an array of us more crowd shy ppl anchored out. Thousands of boats, most decorated in Red, White, and Blue lights, etc.. Kind of like Christmas in July - which is a definite Holiday down here.

They had a couple of F-16 fly overs, several hours of World War II vintage aircraft show and low diving fly overs, including the B25 Bomber of Doolittle fame, P 51 Flying tigers, (Miss America - the long time race winnner in Vegas), YAKS, biplanes, some pre WWII, etc..

The radio even broadcasted comments by the pilots as they flew. One said that the dive they were doing was how ppl learned to yodel...

This was all capped by a 30 minute, knock out fireworks extravaganza choreographed to the radio broadcast.

And fireworks all night all around the 1350 mile shoreline. So, it was quite a climax to all of this week's activities. Of course another round due tonite. The locals drink and party all day and most of the night out there. Local bars deliver food and drinks on Jet-Skis. Quite a different thing.

Well, I hope you all are enjoying the celebration of our freedom and the recognition of those who brought it to us and defend it!

To all you servicemen and women and their support groups - Please accept our most sincere THANK YOU! for hanging in there and doing what's right no matter what~

Hi Dr. John,

That sounds like a pretty impressive lake, with all that shoreline. We spent a lot of summer weekends on a much smaller lake up north in our past; discovered that what we enjoy most are quiet coves, pretty scenery, and escape from the crowds.

Having said that, we have also been to Mardi Gras in New Orleans a few times... interesting, exciting, and (for us) best enjoyed in day or two doses. Your description of locals partying all day and night, and the local bars delivering food and drink on jet skis gives me chills... thoughts of sitting up all night at anchor with a flare gun at the ready!

Thanks for sharing another option on the water. Hope the rest of your holiday weekend is big fun.

Best wishes,
Jim B (who went to bed last night at 9:30  )

Well, Jim,

That type of heavy crowding and partying is also NOT on my list of preferences. I usually go to the more remote North end of the lake to get as far as possible away from crowds, drinking, etc., but the locals have made such a big deal out of this that I thought I ought to witness it at least one time.

I go to the water to decompress from crowds and stress, so that type of partying is the antithesis of my idea of pleasure. I did think I should post it so that others could decide to try it out when in the area, or to warn those, who like me, prefer the quieter, Northern section of Grand Lake.

Enjoy your summer of roaming! You know, not having a schedule sounds like a lot of fun to me!

John
