Mac Videoconferencing Question

Want to have a way to videoconf from my mac laptop to an iMac at work. Yes, a way to claim boat time as work time.

Any experience doing this?? I assume what I need is a high speed card to plug in USB port. Don't think my iPhone 3GS will cut it.

What platform or product will you use for video conferencing? I video conference with people worldwide on a pretty regular basis using a product called Elluminate. It's a Java based product so it works on a Mac or whatever you want. My employer has a large service agreement but you can actually use this product for free with up to three attendees. The only thing you cannot do with the free version is record your meetings. You can share PP slides, video, and voice via VOIP. I had a 2 hour conference yesterday with someone in Singapore for example. The free version is found here: http://www.learncentral.org/user/vroomreg

You can also use a free product called Dim Dim. It offers basically the same functionality. http://www.dimdim.com/

Now, if you do not need to provide a presentation, the very best video conference system out there (for free) is Skype. Specifically using Skype for video calls. You can only video call one person at a time, but the audio quality is hands down the best. Just last week I used Skype via video call to connect with my office for a presentation. They hooked up a laptop to the overhead projector. www.skype.com

Technology is an amazing thing...you mention the boat time...next season if all goes well I will be at a yacht club with Wifi such that I could "work" from the boat :)

Thanks, is the a preferred way to link the laptop mac to the Internet when away from wifi?? Doubt my iPhone is the answer, may need another carrier and USB card

Thanks, Bob

A wireless broadband card is the easiest way to stay connected. Last week, we picked up a MiFi card (wireless broadband and wifi hot spot all in one), and that seems to be faster than our previous card. In fact, we're both on it right now with "dueling laptops."

Used Skype for video conferencing for two ten hour days of continuous video conferencing last week [except for 20 minute lunch] . Good quality sound, and picture. Wifi at this end from macbook pro, to windows machines in another state on land lines.

two weeks ago however i saw post about break in Skype security - don't know if that has been addressed. But using updated version might help
