Lowrance Structure Scan

Installing a new Lowrance HDS9 with Structure Scan in Red Top, a 22' cruiser. Only have 1 foot between trim tab and engine mount either port or starboard. Lowrance says mount at least a foot away from engine on starboard side with a foot between the down scan and structure scan transducers. Old Garmin transducer was mounted starboard midway between engine and tab, starboard, and seemed to work OK, but display tiny when charts and sonar up on screen and charts were old therefore update.

Possibilities:

Down scan, starboard, structure scan port?
Down scan 1" from trim tan, structure scan 6" away, starboard side?

Suggestions?

Generally depth sounder transducers are on the Starboard side, since there seems to be less prop induced turbulence there. I have a Garmin standard transducer and down scan mounted side by side between the engine and trim tab--closer to the trim tab. There does not seem to be any interference between them, since I use different frequencies.

The side scan (structure scan I believe) can be a problem if the motor is in its angle of view to either side of it. I know of some boats where this is a problem, and a second side scan transducer has been installed on the port side. However, with slow speeds and the outboard, which can be trimmed "up" to be sure it is out of the way, it should work fine on the Starboard side of the boat.

As far as interference between two transducers--it can be a problem if they are both on the same frequency.

Because it is best to mount on a Starboard block, and not bore a number of holes in the transom--(which can introduce water into the transom) I would favor one side for both--and get a Starboard block wide enough that both transducer bouts will fit--probably about 12" x 3" l x 3/4" thick would suffice.

Can you use the new total scan transducer on that model? it has down side and traditional all in one unit. That is why I will be installing one with the new simrad go 7 . simrad and lowrance are the same think for the most part.

starcrafttom,

I installed a TotalScan Transom Mount Transducer last summer. I'd be thrilled to learn about your results so let us know.

I mounted the transducer between the engine and trim tab on a piece of stainless angle which bolts to the boat above the waterline. It's connected to a Lowrance Elite-Ti display. In the year of using it, either the sea floor is extremely flat and featureless or it has limited side scan ability. Gives good depth though.

Navico replaced the first sensor because the sponge rubber at the top of the sensor deteriorated. Both sensors gave the same result.
