I want an auto pilot on my 2002 22 cruiser. I already have lowrance gps and fish finder and would prefer not to switch. the ideal and affordable situation would to get a lowrance compatible cable steer unit. I see one listed for $1300 but not sure how good it works. it has been suggested to install hydraulic steering. anyone have any experience with the lowrance cable steer thing? or advice. $ is an issue

Never had a cable steer autopilot that worked very well. Change to hydraulic steering then both Raymarine and Garmin have entry level pilots that work. If you need one that will fish slow you’ll need to spend more money. If you have to do it twice you didn’t save any money.

yeaah so far that seems to be the advice. would like to stick w lowrnance if possible as i'm already tooled up and kind of understands it lol

You will always wonder how you survived without the AutoPilot after you get it, learn to use it, and then start getting comfortable with it.

Amen, brother. I, like you Harvey, single-hand a lot; Fred is indispensable (yes, I've even named my auto pilot).

I have the hydraulic Lowrance Autopilot and it's great. Maybe post on the Lowrance facebook users group to find out about the cable version.
