Looking for a 25 C-Dory 2005-2007

Hi folks,

I'm in the market for a boat this spring ( here in St John's, Nl Canada and winter is closing in ) and I was looking at the C-Dory and the Osprey. I like the C-Dory as they seem well priced and I could trailer it with my 2008 Tacoma. The Osprey though seems more of a sturdier boat for here in the Atlantic.

For those of you with the C-Dory what can you tell me about this boat for rough water conditions? After looking at the map if I get the C-Dory it looks that I will be the lonley soldier here in eastern Canada? That said, I was wondering is it something with the C Dory design that no one has they here on this side of the country?

Comments would be appreciated....in the meantime, my price range is in the 50,000 to 65,000 range pending on what comes with the boat (a trailer is a must.) I''m willing to have it shipped to Calias, Maine at the border where I would pick it up. I would fly to the location to have a survey done and look at her.

Hi Jim,

Congrats on your good taste. :wink: We have a 25 and really enjoy the boat. There are generally a few for sale in the listings here. When a good buy comes up (and several have recently), you have to move fast to get it.

I'm not familiar with your conditions up there, but these are good boats and can handle a wide variety of conditions. Much has been written here regarding the abilities of these boats, but it really comes down to: the boat can handle more than most operators. And, due to the flatter bottom compared to a V-hull (like the Osprey), you have to slow down when it gets lumpy. That's not a bad thing, because the boats are very seaworthy and will give you a better ride than a similar size v-hull in nasty conditions. You're just not going to blast through 3 foot chop at 20 knots.

Now, regarding you not finding other boats on the map in your area: the map only puts a pin in where a 5 digit zip code has been listed. Since your postal codes are different, no way to put that on the Brat Map. So, there may be others in your area; hopefully, you'll hear from them.

Welcome to the Brats. I think your tow vehicle is too small (Tacoma) for a loaded 25 and trailer. Better downsize your boat idea to a 22 or upsize your tow vehicle to a Tundra (or equivalent).

Jim L. the Canadian Brats don't show up because your country chose not to give you U.S. Zip Codes and our mapping program chose not to use anything but. Rest assured there are Brats there. Use the memberlist and sort it by location.

There does seem to be a Tacoma V 6 with towing package which will tow 6500 lbs. The 25 fully loaded is usually a bit more than that--often in the 7000 to 7500 lb range.

Not sure about your Providence, but BC requires electric over hyraulic brakes over 6800 lbs (we towed our 25 thru BC with surge brakes and no one stopped us, but we were not importing it).

The C Dory will not go fast in a chop--it is a semi dory and thus a very seaworthy boat. The Osprey is a deeper V--and will do better into chop--but the C Dory will do better in cross and down wind.
 
Thanks for the reply folks...I'm going to contact the guy in Nova Scotia who has the C-Dory!

In the meantime, I looked up the tow rating on my Tacoma and with the tow package that I put on it is rated at 6800lbs. Do you think that is sufficent for trailering the 25'.

The c-25 weighs 3600lb dry nothing else then you have engine with batteries over 500lb then a 1000-1500lb trailer plus fuel and water and gear 200lb-1000lb and you have to consider that the new 25s have water heaters, marine heads , windlasses , cockpit canvas ,electronics , etc most c25s are weighing in at over 7000lb

Dr. Bob towed his older 25 and got its weight down to 5800lbor so .so it can be done .I towed our cape cruiser 23(5ooolb) with a Honda Pilot it did OK but was not up to task . we ended up with a Toyota Sequoia 07 now no problems >I think the Tacoma is perfect for the c-22 Good Luck
 
I recently sold my 07 Tacoma, it did have a tow capacity of 6500#. It towed my 22 cruiser great, however my old boat was 5000# and while it had plenty of power to tow it, the rear sagged about 6" requiring me to flip the ball portion of the hitch ocer thus decreasing the tow capacity. If I was going to tow a 25 I would add air lift suspension to it. I originally was going to buy a 25 also and the air would have been #1 on my list. I just think the 25 is more boat than I would want to tow with the Tacoma.
