lazarette on port side

Mine was filling with water while in storage in the back yard.....just from rain sitting in the groove ..... I don't think these hatches were intended to be mounted flat....
While at Lake Powell Chris (Rana Verde) replaced Bill and El's hatch with one of the new ones he bought at West Marine .... $51.99 in the catalog...WM only had one in stock so he was only able to replace one...but ordered more...WM was supposed to have 30 more real soon...probably now they have them...
The new hatches fit in the existing hole perfectly...only the screw holes have to be redrilled in the boat....Chris used a putty knife and a hammer to lift the old hatch...removing the old sealant.

Well...it was nice while it lasted. I was concerned that the new hatch was not as heavily built as the old hatch...and sure enough...the new hatch has already failed. The hinge on the new is plastic...the old hinge made of metal. Guess it's back to the drawing board on this problem.

WOW !! I always thought Bomar was a premium manufacturer...kinda like the BMW of marine stuff.....most of their stuff is super quality..I am suprised....Take it back to West Marine and raise hell.. they should know and so should Bomar...

I was already to order two for myself.... think I will now have to rethink that one.. Thanks Chris

I just sent Bomar an e-mail...telling them about the problem...they should know....they are a quality manufacturer...I would never expect them to ever sell anything that was not quality.
We all should complain about poor quality....C-Dory built the boats with the best available.... they diden't go cheep... they paid for the best...and if the stuff leaks or breaks...we all should complain to Bomar..

Our 'new' Bomar 'improved' hatch is secured with duct tape holding down the cover over the failed plastic hinges to keep the lid from blowing off as we trailer. Urg! But the duct tape sure works!! And the hatch is probably water proof ...

I"m almost sorry i started this thread.
I'm going to just live with the old hatch until this is resolved.

El and Bill: How are you?

Tom --
It's a good thread -- out there is a solution ...

We're doing fine -- just off two weeks on Lake Powell and now in Pacific NW ready to launch for a few months of cruising northerly, so won't make the Chessie Gathering this year. Might be back east in fall.

If the new Bomar hatch just had metal in the hinge, we might have had a solution.

Best to you -- your good music accompanies us en route.

maybe Factory Guy Jeff M & Bomar could do a batch purchase.....

I think this is a heck of a good idea. No one expects to get free replacements, but once this hinge problem is dealt with, I don't think it would kill the factory to offer owners replacement hatches at a reduced rate. After all, C-Dory gets a lot of free R & D from this site and I think the offer of some benefit in return would be welcomed.

Mine also leaked and I think it's mostly condensation as it's been dry down here in Florida for months, and after drying it out, etc, the next day it would be wet again :crook Solved the problem, by converting it to it's natural use, a "live well" :smilep

Roger-

Thank you!

Another believer in the Condensation Theory!!!

Mother Nature is proud of her True Believers!

Actually, it does work quite well as a live well, and if one can get over the idea that it's supposed te dry between usings, not a problem.

For dry use, however, we do have problems with the lids and seals.

I found that I could cut down the water intrusion by carefully cleaning up and then silicone puttying down the gaskets. I still need a suitable catch to hold the lid down tightly, though.

If you're under covered storage or have a cover, a Stanley clamp (like a big clothes pin) can be used to hold the lid open enough to allow any condensation to escape and stop the daily build up that gradually gets the whole interior wet.

Joe.

same here, I am in crystal river, just a tad north of you.
I am thinking about the best way to convert mine also.
