Lake Powell Map

Hi Brats!

As a new C Dory owner I was just sitting down here planning all the wonderful trips that I want to take. Come this spring Lake Powell is one of our main objectives and I have been reading every thread on the site to get an idea on what it would be like. I have been using a new Google Map product called “Google Maps Engine” to create various types of maps for my own use, for example here is one that I created in preparation for our maiden voyage to the San Juans

This got me to thinking I could enlist some of you with extensive knowledge of the area to point out some of the great features of Lake Powell and to add a description it might be a great experiment and possibly a great resource for C Brats to have at thier disposal. If it goes well we could make maps of other areas that people could use and add information to.

I love your San Juan map. However, the Lk Powell map gives me pause.

When I return the lake level is always different = higher or lower by many feet than on the previous trip. I've headed for a place I loved "last time" and with the hope to repeat the experience and its' changed I hardly recognize it. Sandy beaches have become rock cliffs and vice -a-versa. One thing I love about Lk Powell is that each trip is a new experience. I hesitate to make suggestions as it will be different from what I found.

Point taken, perhaps more general points of interest. I notice lots of different bays or arms of the lake. Which ones are the most interesting, have trails or natural landmarks? If one only has a limited time to spend on the Lake which places would you not want to miss?

I guess the Stan Jones map would be a good starting point.

Hi Floyd,

Nice San Jaun map and good notes. I already learned of some new places. Will keep my eye peeled for the lake Powell version. The water fluctuation sounds like a pain. here, our water fluctuates too, but we call it tide and learn to chart and live with it.

I guess people are shy about adding to the map so I went through all the Lake Powell threads and tried to mark every place mentioned. If any of you have any thing to add to the map or add to the descriptions such as "a good place to camp" or "Fantastic Rock Formation" or "Don't Miss this" please do so!

I agree that the lake varies so much with just a foot of water change. The Boater's Guide to Lake Powell, has a lot of nice maps of the various arms. There is not enough detail in the Google Lake Powell, map.

Even if you find a great place one trip--it will be entirely different the next trip--plus, there may be a hoard of houseboats and PWC blocking your way.

Even giving Lat and Long, is difficult, because of the dramatic shoreline changes with a foot of water up or down.
