Lake Powell 2016

I've actually found the Bullfrog end of the lake more scenic. Probably because I enjoy canyons more than I enjoy the flatter stuff. lol. Colby

I've looked through the photo albums for past Lake Powell trips and see a few things that I have questions about.

1) Fishing. I assume that I get a Utah fishing license and go north. What's the simplest gear for success? I'm not looking for trophies. I'm looking for dinner. Are there restrictions for cleaning fish on the water? No crabs to eat the entrails, but does anybody know if there are crawdads? I'm starting to sound like a survivalist, but hey, it's a CD 16.

2) Shade. Some of the beach pictures showed people under simple shade tarps. Lots of guy wires to avoid in a crowded situation, but that looks like the simplest gear to stow. Any glowing reviews for a particular system?

3) WAG bag. Probably not everyone is familiar with these and I'll just cut to the chase. I know that there are stations on the lake for dumping porta-potties (semi-liquid waste), but do these stations have the ability to accept WAG bags that have solidified waste ala Poo Powder? The Glen Canyon NPS site says that WAG bags can be put in any dumpster, but are there garbage dumpsters at the outlying stations?

A spinning or casting rod with some top water lures and spoons work nicely for stripers and other bass species. Rubber worms/craw dads work too. Buy your license online.

A tarp like the Kelty Noah works nicely. Get some telescoping poles, line and a bunch of stakes that hold in sand.

You'll need to take your wag bags to the marinas where there is garbage collection. The floating dump stations don't have any garbage receptacles that I remember. You will probably be at a marina every three or four days. Oh, the dump stations do have toilets.

Hope that helps.

Agree with Wandering Sagebrush. Of course he has gotten Marie up at 5 AM to go fishing...

We like to get our licenses (For Utah--since the vast majority of the lake is in Utah.)-- At Mike's Liquor in Page. Easy to get, he has a great lure selections and knows what is good. Also has most of the publications.

Sometimes the bass are better with plastics, and other with shinny lures.

If you find "boils" of bait fish, work those. Most of the canyons have some some structure, and working around these helps.

We have not had as good luck trolling as some--But work along the steep drop off banks in the shade with trolling or casting. Look at DS to see how deep the fish are.

Read "Wayne's World" on Lake Powell for the latest.

We are planning to be at Oak Canyon on Oct 1st. After reading through the posts on this topic, I see others have made plans. Just wondering how many are still committed to the get together? Scott

Things have worked out where I am able head to Powell this Tuesday, September 6th for 8 days until September 13th. I will launch from Halls Crossing and make my way south to where ever I end up each day.

I am also planning on returning to Powell September 28th and being at Oak Canyon on Saturday, October 1st.

It is not to late for a sign up sheet. Maybe the moderators can add one if they read these posts.

Maybe the reason this worked out differently is that for years we had the same cruise leader/organizer, but this year it's a bit more informal, and it wasn't until later in the thread that we all settled on the date of Oct 1.

Not that we couldn't start a sign up sheet now, but maybe that's why there isn't one so far. Also, I think even with one, Powell is the kind of place where lots of folks will be on the lake before or after the gathering, and will be there, but might not "officially" sign up. At any rate, I can't imagine there won't be a gang. I'm hoping to be there.

Jody,

Those pics are just what I needed to see this morning :thup I'll be back at my boat in a couple of days, and then have some projects to accomplish before I can launch. Number one is that last time I was at the boat I started the process of re-wiring the rat's nest behind the helm, plus moving the house battery and re-doing that wiring better now that I know more about wiring (last time someone else did it for me). I've got most of the big wiring cut/labeled/and terminated, so mostly need to do the arrangement behind the helm, and finish up the battery platform/hold down.

Number two is that due to an injury some time has passed since I was last able to use the boat, so even though I had Stabil etc. in the fuel, I want to drain the tanks and start fresh, rather than run the old fuel through.

And then of course a bunch of "little" things, but those two are the main ones (wiring and fuel being somewhat non-negotiable  ).

This'll also be my first pull since I re-did all the trailer bearings/brakes/hubs/coupler/wiring (so in other words the frame is still the same  ).

So I've been feeling a bit daunted (I imagine that will change once I'm actually there and working on things) and your pics were JUST what I needed to remember that there is a wonderful reward for tackling these things. Powell and seeing other Brats and their "C's"!

We'll be at Oak Canyon on or before Oct. 1st. Launching from Bullfrog marina, on the 28th or 29th. Does anyone know what has happened to Chris?

I don't know, but if I remember correctly, he had retired, moved, and was building a house. Not that any of those three could keep a guy busy...

Sure would be nice if he were coming to Powell :thup He really has a way with introducing new folks to the lake (which I benefitted from greatly). Of course many C-Brats have a lot of Powell experience, and are happy to share.
