Hi everyone! Thanks for having me. I just placed an order for a new Angler 19. I right now plan on having a Yamaha F90 and a matching 9.9 kicker mounted. What I would like to know is if a kicker is really necessary with the troll controls you can now buy? I know there are benefits with a kicker, but if I can troll just as slow with the main motor, with a troll control, I’d rather put that money towards something else. I just don’t know if the troll controls slow down the bigger motors (the 90 hp in my case) enough to troll for Kokanee, salmon, trout etc.. Thank you in advance!
 
My troll control on my 2019 Honda 90 does not allow for a slow enough troll when going with the current or wind but fine against the current, plus it really racks up the hours on the main and QUICKLY. I really only use my troll control if my kicker goes down or acts up. I have a Honda 8hp on my 22 angler it works out great, a little stern heavy with both motors but I usually only carry half a tank of gas. Sometimes if I'm alone I'll troll on the main just to make it a little bit easier not having to hook up the ez-steer bar. The piece of mind have 2 motors is priceless, somthing to think about
 
Congratulations on the purchase of your new 2020 C-Dory 19. If you like to fish, definitely go with a kicker motor. We fish for Coho and the main is too powerful to troll at our preferred speed of 2.2 Knots. Besides, if you idle your main hours on end you will need to do more frequent oil changes than the recommended service hours on your maintenance schedule. Often we put more hours on our kicker in a day of fishing than we do on the main to get to our favorite fishing grounds. Our kicker pushes the boat at hull speed if ever we had trouble with the main to get us back safely to harbor. I also recommend that you go with the lowest pitch prop possible so that you can keep the rpm's up in the recommended high rpm range when at full throttle and it will also help you go slower at idle. Your boat will only get heavier as the years go by with all your new gear, safety equipment, new and old friends now that want to go fishing with you etc. Using a kicker will also keep the hours down on the main if you ever wish to sell the boat.

Be sure and get the "high thrust" with the high thrust prop option on the kicker. This allows a larger prop, and thus more thrust than the 9.9 which would be used on a dinghy or small aluminum skiff.

The high thrust 9.9 uses "Yamaha’s Dual Thrust propeller is the answer for heavy loads such as sailboats and pontoons. They’re standard on the High Thrust T9.9,"
 
If you are looking at cost, the 9.9 seems like overkill on a 19. I've got a 22 with a Tohatsu 6hp. It can push me at hull speed (4.5-5mph) with no problem. However, I know the 9.9 will give you more options, like an altenator. Colby
 
Colby you are right. If I were to buy a new C-Dory 19, I would personally buy the Tohatsu 6 hp sail pro motor as a back-up and fishing/trolling motor. The sail pro high thrust will give you more thrust as Dr. Bob speaks of. I have the Tohatsu 6 hp regular motor on my small aluminum boat and love it. Our Tohatsu has only seen saltwater usage in the bay at Newport, Or. and is holding up quite well. Tohatsu makes great outboard motors. They are very reliable and well engineered. Gary.
 
Even if you don't have a kicker for trolling I would install one as a get me home motor. Last October my Honda 90 gave me problems in the San jaun river at Lake Power and we cruised the 45 miles home to Bull Frog on the Honda 9.9. I try to run the 9,9 (Grezky Jr.) for about an hour every few days. This keeps the motor in good condition and it is cheaper to run than the 90 when I am not in a hurry.
