Is it spring yet?

Pat's right. I never realized a phenomenon that occurs up here in Seattle nearly every year until my old boss, who happened to be from Germany, pointed out that every late January, early February, we have a week to 10 days of sunny 50-60 degree weather. People start thinking spring is here and then of course, the rains come back for another two months or so. Every year thereafter, when I took the time to notice, I realized that he was right.

Sooo... Mark, when we get that nice little "false spring" in late Jan/early Feb, remember that I mentioned it here. I'm certainly waiting for it. In fact, we too have some pics from February 2006 where we were enjoying our first winter with C-Dancer...

We have the reciprocal phenomenon in the Tropical Tip: some years we get a week to 10 days of crappy weather during January and February. :xnaughty

I know I will pay for that comment... we're still in Arizona and "winter weather" is predicted here for the next few days: snow in the higher elevations, daytime highs in the Phoenix area in the 50s, nighttime lows around freezing. It's all perspective - while in the frozen northland this month, I got to see temps below zero, blizzard conditions, wind chill in the -30s (that's MINUS). I don't miss that cold crap one bit.

I still have to shake my head at the reports of "sun breaks" when we were there for the Seattle Boat Show in 2006... "In tonight's news, there was 30 seconds of sun breaks in the metro area - film at 11:00." :xseek

Warm wishes,
Jim

Thanks, Peter. I have put it on my calendar.

Yes, Warren...please share. :P

I would rather have it @ 25F and CLEAR & SUNNY, than this interminable, never-ending, depressing, lowly, 1,000 foot, I-feel-like-jumping-off-a-bridge GRAY/DRIZZLE. (I won't really jump off a bridge, but you get my point  ) This time of year I feel the PNW weather sucking the life out of me, and not just because of boating. I've tried vitamin D, excercise...pretty much everything short of anti-depressants. In short, I'm just not "wired" for this crap. :(

I think I need a trip home.

Mark,

Don't pay any attention to Jim, He just doesn't "get it" about the charm of the PNW. I admit it is a little cool in Sequim tonight, 32 degrees. But check out the rainfall totals Here
On an overcast Winter day, I can still see Victoria and the San Juans! You just need a change of scenery.

We still love you Jim, come back soon! :hug :hug2

Sorry, couldn't resist.... Mark should be happy now, cause I'm guessing that he has some of that gorgeous white stuff (snow) like we have in Arlington... :xlol

Hey Mark,

There is a term for that condition,
"interminable, never-ending, depressing, lowly, 1,000 foot, I-feel-like-jumping-off-a-bridge GRAY/DRIZZLE. (I won't really jump off a bridge, but you get my point ) This time of year I feel the PNW weather sucking the life out of me, and not just because of boating.

It is sometimes called SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder, and is a viable, predictable, bonifide and treatable. Short of 2 weeks out of the month, every month from October to April, spent in those off shore islands, (Yup--Hawaii) making the difference, a good therapy light can help. Narrow band blue spectrum, 10,000 lux a day, especially with the Vitamin D can help. Of course, it is a good idea to consult a licensed medical care provider for an evaluation and a prescription. don't feel like the lone ranger though, SAD is much more common than most folks believe, but often times masked by the ubiquitous use of "antidepressants".

Now back to or regular weather program, "It will be sunny and seventy here in Sequim today :hot :wink :xnaughty

Oh, I get it, Roger. When I am asked about our favorite place to cruise, the answer is always the Pacific Northwest. But, just like localboy Mark, I NEED the sunshine. If I am subjected to 3 days of no sun, I get like a caged lion. I would need the white jacket with the long sleeves that tie in the back if I were subjected to an entire season of gray skies. Just like I have a great deal of respect for the guys who live in Alaska... or western Wyoming (coldest place on the face of the earth)... you PNW guys have my respect for being able to spend the winter there. You guys (and gals) are tough.

We have signed up for another summer in the Tetons, so we won't be back to the PNW this summer... but, one day we will be back. Sending the love right back at ya.

Best wishes,
Jim

20 below here tonight. Dreaming of warmer days and our future winter escapes to somewhere south. At lease I have little distraction to get my boat projects done.

-20 is pretty cold. I hate it when I go outside and my nose hair freezes after about 30 seconds. It was -20 at my friends cabin the other day ago when we were hauling wood on the ice road for the upcoming holiday. BTW the coldest I have ever seen it was in Tok about three years ago on a March trip to Spokane and it was an honest -60 to -70 degrees. Fortunately it broke soon as staying in the hotel was getting expensive - albeit much warmer than the truck there was no way in hell I was driving in that temperature as if anything happens you are dead.

That -60 to -70 is cold. I can not really imagine that, i have experienced -30 degree Centigrade and your breathe would freeze . I think we should all go and spend some time with Joe in California, he says the weather is great there. :xlol Tug

I know, Harvey, hence my first post in this thread:
No, it's not! And it makes me S.A.D.
M actually bought me a light a few yrs ago, but I returned it, as I could not fit it's use in w/ my work schedule, since you're supposed to use it in the morning. :crook ANYWAY...the sun IS out :thup although the boat is covered in ICE :thdown . My son, DIL & the grandkids just left for their return to Vancouver so it's back to work for me tomorrow. :x But at least it's not RAINING. :P

Go outside if you want to see one of those Sunny/cold pacific northwest days. We will be out on the water for sure this weekend.

Jetty island in Everett looks interesting and has the lack of amenities we thrive on.........Or port Ludlow, or......

Nice to have that heated cabin!

We drove up 20 this afternoon to see the bald eagles near Marblemount. Beautiful, but next year we are going up while the sun is overhead!

It's not spring yet, but it is to be almost 70 degrees here in NC on New Year's Day.

I'm planning to go to the beach and take a short walk in the sand. Perhaps a little sand in my shoes will cheer me up?

Today it is 5 C with a little rain. Very warm for this time of year,Boat is all covered up for the winter so fishing is out, but today is a good day to charge my boat battery's. In the winter i take the batterys out of the shed and charge them once a month, that seems to keep the batterys in good shape.Tug

Kevin and I are probably going to compete for bragging rights on Montana cold nights. He is in Bozeman and I in White Suffering Springs, both towns at over 5,000 feet. Only WSS has more wind. The coldest weather I was actually out in was - 47 F. Right now it is a balmy 10 below F and a low expected around a - 20F.

Life goes on here in spite of the weather. Fortuantely, my vehicles sit in a heated garage. The Far West looks a little bit chilly outside, but I doubt if any of those nasty critters like zebra mussels are going to make it to spring.

Our birds survive the nights by burrowing deep into the snow. We have several feeding stations that help them get some extra BTUs.

Best wishes to all the C-Brats for a properous new year. John

I saw a -47 one time. A night in Logan UT, and it froze an IV line in 3 steps out the door, (10 seconds or so), and it snapped like a glass hair when I reached to tuck it into the Sleeping bag.
