iPad questions...

I bought a wifi/3G iPad. I'm not intending to connect via AT&T with the 3G, but that model has the GPS chip in it; no need to be connected to the internet to use the GPS function. When I do an app search, there are about a gazillion to pick from. I will buy and load the Navionics charts for the boat as the need and destination arises, but I'm looking for a good GPS app to use in the truck. In the app store, they range in price from $.99 to $49.99. The short description doesn't give you the "meat and potatoes" of the functioning, and the ratings seem to be weighted on good and bad on the same app.

So, is there a GPS app that anyone here has found to be functional in the land vehicle? (My Droid came with a great GPS/Google app.)

Any other good apps that you've found to be "essential"?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

I really like the MotionX apps. They make a road edition and they have a general gps version. The general gps version allows you to cache maps on the device and they have an option to download NOAA charts which I have used and worked well even though they call it experimental. I think you will see there is a "lite" version that you can try out.

Thanks for the suggestions! :thup

The GPS chip in the iPad works fine to show you where you are on Google Maps... But I'm kinda used to having speed, ETA, heading, etc available. However, the iPad held in there in the tall trees where my older Garmin unit couldn't find the satellites.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

I'll be interested in following this for the GPS issue. I have the Motion X, and it works beautifully on land for almost no money.

Talking Tom entertains children.
SOS Quake tells you the latest on quakes around the world.
Pro Keys turns it into a piano and drum!
News Pro is very good.
Appstream shows you lots of apps.

I've been deeply disappointed that the iPad doesn't display the BIS-portal site (wind data in vectors), which is one of my primary marine weather sites. Flash player issue. Grrrrr.

I've got a 1941 ESSO road map on the wall here in plastic so I can see both sides. It's of the Washington DC area, long before the beltway, no pentagon, the Navy Department down on the Mall in wooden barracks. Very interesting. It was in my Dad's stuff and I recovered it after he passed away. (No Jim, I'm not THAT old, but darn close!)

But back to the Ipad, maybe I'll have to break down and finally buy an Apple product just to play with it!
