We're finding fewer times when the amp is needed ourselves too. On the boat we have a wired in Wilson amp with a cradle. Pop the MiFi in the cradle and it amps it.

For more portable times or if you just want something simple occasionally, the Cell Ranger is a pretty good solution. It's what I was using in the Greenport theater.

Amazon is the best place to get it - costs about $90. I'd suggest getting the USB version instead of the 12V version - it gives more options for AC/DC/USB. Also make sure you have a small ground plane for it. A small 6" pizza pan will significantly increase amplification.
 
Thanks for the info, Jeffrey! Always good to get "local information" from actual users. We'll be heading into a semi-wilderness area this summer, so it's good to know what works.
