Hello:

Just wanted to introduce myself. I am new to the site and I am here because I am researching a boat purchase. The purchase I am considering must be able to fish (75%) as well as cruise/camp (25%). My home waters will be the Puget Sound. I have a family of four. I have been boat shopping for the past three years (procrastinating/waiting for my kids to get a little older). Up to this point I had been looking at the osprey, orca, and sea sport genre thinking I needed a larger boat to be able to accomodate my family.

In addition to the criteria described above, the boat must be able to be easily trailerable, economic to run and fit into a moderate budget. I am wondering what people will suggest/recommend for me.

Thanks. I have been reading postings for the last couple of days and there seems to be a good deal of very good information here. I look forward to learning more as time goes on.

Welcome to the c brats! Lots of knowledge here. A lot of us have gone down the same road as you are on. We set out our mission parameters (fancy huh) and then picked the c dory. The Orca, Seasport and Osprey are great boats. What may be good is to decide what you mean by moderate budget and economical to run. Knowing those boats means they don't fit my idea of moderate or economical. We can run a 22 c dory at 6 knots for 9 miles a gallon or at 20 knots at 3.15 miles a gallon. Those other boats can't hit numbers like that. I had a client run $600 dollars a weekend in gas thru an Orca for a couple seasons when gas was $.90 a liter yikes nowadays They also require a big tow rig. Peruse some posts here ESP Halcyon days and Wild Blue and lots of others. Welcome again good searching

Wow! Are you in luck.. There will a couple dozen C-Dorys and their helpful owners in LaConner this weekend. Stop on down to the guest dock on the N end of town and introduce yourself. Click on event signups to see a list and view the discussion thread from there.

Hi friend,

I have a family of four. Up to this point I had been looking at the osprey, orca, and sea sport genre thinking I needed a larger boat to be able to accomodate my family.

Selecting between a 22 and a 25 is a bit subjective when it comes to crew size. How much personal space and all that.

Another issue is porta-pottie vs marine toilet/shower.

I'm just a single guy so others here can advise on these issues.

As far as the boats themselves, I think you'll find that they meet your criteria.

Good luck on your search and don't be afraid to ask questions.

This site is blessed with helpful, knowledgeable folks.

Any of the boats will be tight for a family of four--but families of 5 or more have cruised in 22s. It just takes "adjustments". For example some of the crew may sleep on the cabin sole, or in the cockpit. Sometimes a tent is taken and some of the crew sleep ashore.

My personal choice for 4 would be the 25 or one of the 25 cruise ships--or maybe even that 26 commercial i/O which is currently for sale.

The boat with the most room, and best ride is the Tom Cat---but it takes a bigger truck etc.

We have owned two 22's a 25 and a TC. Ended up back with a 22. We are going to Catalina with 5, and 3 are sleeping in the campground....We chose a bigger truck than necessary, but it has made trailering much easier.

You can visit the inlaws any weekend. We're talking boats here. See if they won't understand.

If they don't, there are lots of CBGTS (C Brat Get Togethers) in the PNW. Click on events at the top of the page.

Oh yeah, welcome to the Brats and good luck in your hunt!
