Hey folks.

Any recommendations for best insurance policy / company for my 25 C-Dory?

Will be based on Vancouver island.

We use Progressive now. We had always been with BoatUS for years but Progressive was almost 1/2 the annual premium and many gave them good reviews. Also, I was able to set my own Agreed Value - BoatUS limited what I could set.

Never had a claim with either, so no claims experience.

You're in Canada. So I don't know what choices you have. But here's my opinion.

I have Progressive for my motorcycle insurance.

That said, we also have State Farm for the rest of our insurance. Including the boat. The good thing I like about State Farm is that we are covered whilst we're in Canada, up to 75 miles into that country.. Also Mexico (fat chance of that.) I believe there's no hurricane prohibitions which is good only if you're in the Southeast USA..And it's cheap for us.

So what is important is to read the policy and realize that some cover more than others. Someday that may be of importance.

Like Boris indicated, since you are in Canada your choices will probably be different. For the record, our Progressive Insurance also covers 75 miles up into Canada, but does not cover Mexico, but then I have no interest in taking Sea Shift to Mexico.
Our Canadian C-Brats should be able to advise you as to what Boat Insurance Companies have been best for them.

We have Progressive through USAA on our 22' Cruiser and on our drift boat. Went over to them a year ago, and we're happy with them so far.

Had me a bit nervous on the "up to 75 miles into that country" - we go well past that on our trips. Here is the info from Progressives website - 75 miles pertains to the miles off the coast (Ocean Waters) - not related to Canada specifically.

With Coastal Navigation coverage, you are covered when you boat on all inland lakes, rivers and navigable waterways in the continental United States and Canada, including ocean waters 75 miles or less from each country's coast

So far I haven't found any marine insurance company that I would say I've been totally pleased with for any of our boats over the last 30 years in Canada. It does seem to matter how good of a marine insurance survey you had done on your boat before going to the insurance companies for quotes. Also pay attention to areas of coverage in the policies, especially if you are thinking of doing the Inside Passge to Alaska or going on the outside coast of say Vancover isaland. The riders for those extra areas can get pricey. It also helps your rate if the boat is stored out of the water during the winter months. As in all things insurance read the fine print.

Brazo, You are correct...I was wrong in stating "up to 75 miles into Canada"......In rereading my Progressive policy it states "A Coastal Navigation limit applies to this policy. Unless you pay a premium for Coastal Navigation Limit coverage, you are not covered for losses that occur more than 75 nautical miles from the coast of the United States or Canada or for losses that occur in any territory or territorail waters of any country other than the United States or Canada." (My policy does include the Coastal Navigation).
Thanks Brazo for bringing this to my attention. :smile

We have progressive thru a marine agency. I checked about our Canadian and Alaska Trips--and even with our "Florida" insurance we were covered in the Canadian and AK waters, as long as we were not 75 miles off shore. The Bahamas require a rider.

Like many of the other C-Brats we switched from Boat US to Progressive. The Progressive cost was 1/2 the Boat US policy, and we set the agreed value.

My insurance co for the cars referred me to Progressive. They have decent MARINE coverage. They have fuel spill coverage. Both of my boats are small and I never expect to have a problem, but you never know. I have a high deductible and high liability coverage. If somebody steals one of the boats, I can get a new one. I've never had a claim.

Though Progressive seems to be a very good deal in the USA, however there is no Progessive Insurance in Canada. Which is to bad as I think I would switch to them as well. http://progressiveinsurancecanada.com/
Progressive offers quotation for customers within USA, unfortunately Progressive Insurance Canada is not available, Progressive doesn’t have its branch in Canada
So the the original poster's question is still an unkown for him.
