Instant on demand hotwater heater for boats

I think those things are wonderful. One of the kids has one and it works great. Also, they come in propane, which is what we have at home.

By the way, they list for $750. I'll wait until we need one for the house, and then revisit the item.

A few comments. The unit has "Hydro-generated ignition" which might mean that the flame come on when the water is turned on, since no electricity is required. How would that work? A loss of pressure fires a piezoelectric igniter? And it has "A modulating gas valve which gives constant temperature at varying flow rates". Nice to know that you wouldn't get scalded.

Tom,

We had friends who had a similar but smaller Hot H2O system on their B-boat. (He had done all kinds of cool mods on that boat,) and it worked great. Nice system, but seemed a bit spendy.

Great idea, and I just ordered one from Amazon.

Now, has anyone plumbed one of these small instant hot water units into a CD plumbing system?

If so, how did you do it, and where did you put it? Were you concerned at all about propane getting loose inside the boat?

Yup, That is why I did not do it. Chicken I guess, and don't much like it fried.

My B-boat friends put theirs on the forward side of the v-birth bulkhead, inside the cabin. I only went on their boat a couple times after that.

If I were going to put it on the system it would be outside the aft cabin bulkhead.

I useda similar system on a sailboat we built. The heater was in the shower, and stack out the vent at the top of the shower. (external vent is essential).

We had propane for the stove and oven. There was a specific locker, vented overboard, with a sniffer in the bilge and under the stove and water heater. If any of the sniffers picked up propane fumes, the selenoid valve shut automatically. We also had a switch which cut off the propane after each use. Sw only used the water heater when we needed it--very fast at heating water and very effecient. Best on a 25 or boat with a stall type shower. The tubing was specific for propane, and minimal connections. The ignitor was manual in our set, and we turned on a pilot light when we wanted to use the heater.
Very worth while.
