Inflatables

On another thread I mentioned my small inflatable, a Bombard AX1, made by Zodiac. 6'7" long, 3'9" wide, weight 33lbs. I have been pleased with the one I bought in 2004. It can be easily hauled out of the water by one person and stowed on the roof of our C-Dorys. Also good for a outboard up to 4hp. These inflatables new are approx $1250 today. I see S.G. Power Ltd (in Victoria, BC) have them on special at $799, heck of a deal. If you are in the market for a small inflatable, check out the pictures at www.sgpower.com

I've been thinking about getting a 6'7" inflatable but haven't been able to see one on person to get any measurements. If it's not too much trouble for you, could you get the measurement from the outside of the transom to the bow? Basically the length of the boat not including any tube aft of the transom. Thanks!

FWIW, Mercury also makes a 6'7" inflatable that I have seen online for around $500. I don't know what the quality is like, though.

We had one of the 6'7" inflatables for a number of years. They are small, but light (as I recollect ours was close to 30 lbs). Cramped for any long trip--but adequate for Me (6'2" 180, Marie 5' 8" --and one small dog in AK and other areas) The beauty is the lightness and ease of carry.

I have it all rolled up in it's bag for winter storage. But for a fellow brat................ it is 5ft from the outside of the transom to the bow. Hope this helps.

Martin, thanks so much! I think this dinghy will fit on the roof right behind the radar and overhang a foot into the cockpit. Since I have the high top and the bow turns up a bit, I think the dinghy will be high enough that it won't be in the way.

Thanks again,
Sam,

Is that the same boat as the West Marine RU 260 ? It is a roll-up made by zodiac and frequently goes on sale for around that price.

We have a Bombard PVC airmax 2 we bought from Defender marine. It weighs about 50 pounds takes up to a 4 hp motor. It has a high pressure air blow up floor. Small but does the job, we bought one of those 12 vdc powered blowers as after you get done blowing it up with the included foot pump you would be too tired to go anywhere. Make sure the pump you buy can handle the range of air pressures required as our air floor requires 11+ pounds of inflation. We use a 2.5 hp Yamaha four stroke we named junior. We carry the motor on a bracket inside the cockpit. The dink sits standing on end rolled up in the cockpit. This year we try putting the inflated dink sans the motor on top of the rear of the cabin and on top of our camper top. The blower also can suck out the air and aids in getting the boat back in the bag.

We put the AX 1 sized boat with the transom forward, and pontoons on each side of the radar pedestal on the 22, and 25. Boat right side up--with crap or shrimp pots and line inside rarely gets any rain in it, with the plug out. Plus it was used every day, so any water was dumped out as we launched it. I also was able to put it on the cabin top when single handing--a bit of contortion, but fairly easy to do.

For all the folks wondering what an inflatable looks like atop a 22, here are two images of a 7'7" and 8'8" Achilles air-floor (LSI).

Each boat is positioned BEHIND the mast-light .

I like the looks of that 7'7". May keep an eye out for one of those..

Nice pics Pete, thanks. One other thing I would like to mention with my AX1. It is real quick and easy to inflate with the foot pump, only two chambers. For those of you with the low roof stainless arch (me included), it is no prob having it only partially inflated while cruising. Only takes a jiffy to fully inflate before launch.

I have the low roof and low arch too, and it looks too low to fit a fully inflated dinghy under. But I have the rod holders like you and was thinking of cutting/grinding them off to get more clearance through the arch. I probably wouldn't do it until I have a reason to though!

You can now see how compact the AX1 is in my album. I have low radar arch, spotlight up front, and it still fits on the roof.
