I Pad 2 Jailbreak

We're in the San Juans online trying to get the I Pad2 to be a hot spot for our Mac Book Pro. The internet says to use MyWi 4.0 but you have to jailbreak. What is jailbreak? Is it legal? Will it void our I Pad warrantee?

Help

Thanks

Jailbreaking is process of removing limitations placed by Apple on devices such as the iPhone and iPad, usually by installing a program for doing this.

It is commonly done in order to install programs, such as MyWi 4.0, that Apple censors and will not place in it's app-store.

The trade-off is that once you are getting unexamined programs, you could unwittingly install software that destabilizes the system, or is malevolent. Auto updates will also no longer work.

Jailbreaking is legal in the U.S., and if you could always restore the device to its' original settings, or to a backup of the device before you jail-broke it, if you don't like the results. Just be sure to do a backup before you start.

If the only reason you want to jailbreak is to avoid tethering fees then be warned that carriers can detect that you are using it for that purpose and may elect to charge you as though you ordered the service. If you are on a grandfathered plan for unlimited then this is an issue, since if you lose the plan you will not be able to get it back, otherwise don't worry about it.

My nephew, who is an IT major, even rigged his iPhone 4 so it can dual-boot (switch) between being an iPhone or an Android, depending on what he wants to do.

If you decide that you want to give it try, let me know, and I'll try to come up with more specific instructions

My iPhone is jailbroken so I can use PDAnet for tethering. I use the "hide usage" feature and haven't had any problem with AT&T. Works great.

My iPad is not jailbroken.

I have elected to not jail break my i phone/i pad because of warrantee issues, and I have an early unlimited plan, which I have been able to keep through upgrades.

I use a MiFi connection for the laptop--willing to pay a bit more and avoid the chance of voiding the warrantee.

Good explanation and articles!

Thanks for all the good info.

I'm assuming you wouldn't need to jailbreak to load the Navionics program right?

Is that program available at the App store or how do you load it?

This I Pad is great so far........just need to learn how to use it.

Thanks

Navionics is at the app store. Nothing at the app store requires jail breaking. The pricing of Navionics has changed slightly--but still a bargin!

No jailbreak needed for Navionics, and it is in the app store.

Some other good boating apps that I have found valuable include:

- BuoyData: Even though the data can be gotten from the NOAA website, this is more efficient.

- AyeTides: Even though there are lots of free tide/current apps, this one stores the data on the phone, so it works even when you are out of range.

- NOAA Weather Service's sector maps: These are on the web, not programs, but I have made icons for frequently used ones in order to allow for one-button access. To set it up:

1) Go to weather.gov If it asks whether you want the Mobile site, or the Regular, non-mobile site, select the Regular, non-mobile site.
2) Tap your approximate location on the map. If you get it wrong, you can always back up and try again.
3) Once you have the right local area tap on the Add Bookmark icon at the bottom of your browser; it looks like a box with an arrow jumping out.
4) Tap on Add to Home Screen. You now have an icon on your device that will take you directly to that weather map!
5) Tapping anywhere on the map will give you localized weather reports, including wind and wave predictions, for that location.
