HURRICANE IRENE

As with El and Bill, Marie and I have all of your in our thoughts. We increased our supplies when we saw the first signs of Irene--but it has pulled much further East in its path. With some luck, it may be no US hit--or at least down graded to a TS when it comes ashore way North....

If it were coming into the Gulf, we would be in full prep, and ready to evacuate mode at this time.

FM Va. Beach, VA

Here in Va. Beach the news guys are all along the beach fronts here and south Hatteras.

The local WX Doc is thinking we may very well get the west side of IRENE. The East Coast Surfing Championships are running here now and other than beach monitoring equipment, tents & banners (a lot of each) everyone there is looking forward to the 'big waves'.

I remember and have been thru enough of these storms, and NorEasters, since 1945 that I keep a close eye on them and respect their power. Speaking of power, the natural gas 15KVA AUXGEN has been load tested and ready to handle the hit here. I have the extra extension cords ready to help and supply some power to my neighbors(2).

As long as the dwelling stands up, natural gas flows and the water supply is OK, we should be fine.

The Navy is on 24 hour standby for getting underway out of Norfolk as of noon yesterday. They will move well before the storm and get well out to sea.

All of my boats are hauled except for Captain's Cat and she will be tomorrow AM and hauled inland with Thataway to rest ashore safely away from trees and flying stuff. Whole house generator (18KW) is on automatic, and there are 400 gal of propane in the underground tank. We're ready, or will be by dark tomorow night.

Us, we're heading for San Diego at 0700 on Sunday morning out of Richmond Airport, probably after the passing of the storm (I hope). Will be gone until Thursday, hope the folks in New England are well prepared, they could have it worse than we do.

Charlie;
Safe trip and hope you have a good tail wind for a change; both ways.

Congrats on the new addition. I am so happy you have this fine CD that has been a "living example" of what can be done by a true craftsman.

I could not get a tank here propane because we have natural gas to the house when I was jumping thru the hoops for permits.. [A 20# would not last but a few hours.]

Keep the sump pump ready and hope you don't need any PFDs up there.

Sea Angel is in the marina's barn, so this is where I appreciate the annual fees of $3500.

We bought a hurricane pull out plan back in April for C's Slapshot (25 cruiser). We do not have a trailer or even a vehicle to tow it. Yesterday she got pulled out of the water and placed inside the new (hurricane proof?) storage area. They pulled all sorts of boats out today, but it was nice to have first dibs on the inside spot. We're still in the "cone of possibility" for a hit, but it looks to be more of an outerbanks hit than a southeastern NC hit. We've had tons of rain in the last week, so flooding is a big concern. If nothing else, we'll get to have her power washed.

We listened to the news via satellite radio in Minnesota they are saying this storm is a monster. New Jersey and New York have been very lucky for quite a while. I hope everyone takes this one seriously. They were saying if it whacks New Jersey it could be another Katrina. I hope they were just trying to sell papers.

Sheriff just notified us that Ocean View, Bethany Beach, et al in Sussex County Delaware will get mandatory evac order tonight. Concern is lack of electricity for up to one week based on past performance of the electric co-op along with highway flooding at the river crossings and trees on the roads.

We were ready to stay for 3 or 4 days but a week might not work too well as we do not have generator on this house yet.

Our daughter in Arlington VA has invited us and the two Golden Retrievers to come visit our almost one year old grandson for the duration so not all that bad provided house is standing when we come back.

Take care all.

I'm involved with the local port emergency issues and right now our port is almost ready. The port will most likely close for all traffic before the storm begins to sweep Hampton Roads.
All of my power boats are inside of a local dry storage and my trimaran sailboat is at my floating dock cleared of everything topside with extra fenders and mooring lines. If I put the tri in my backyard, I'd be more concerned about it getting hit by tree branches.
Hopefully it passes at low tide...

Steve,
Hope you don't have the issues that hit last time we had a visit with all the flooding of the public utilities and tunnels. Purely selfish of me because I will need the natural gas supply to function to maintain our generator.

I'm just across the river in Va Beach, so you have a place to hide, if you choose.

For practice we are currently having a BIG thunder and lightning event with lots of rain!

They are easing off on the evac order for residents so we will decide tomorrow whether to stay or run. Can even wait until Saturday morning to make final call.

I've been through ~15 -20 of these things ranging from Cat 1 to Cat 4 - none of them had me in the center of the eye. Irene is tracking to have the eye pass directly over Beaufort/Morehead City, NC - with me in the middle of it if I elect to stay. That could mean 125+ sustained for >1' duration with gusts exceeding 150mph and that's just on one side of the eye wall. If the center does hit Beaufort, that means twice the impact - this is the most interesting direct assault I have had to prepare for. I generally don't board up the house for a Cat 3 - the upper story vents get boarded but that's it, and it's primarly because the hurricane is tracking "off-shore". With a Cat 3 eye impending over my house, that's an entirely different story. I'm boarding up the entire house for this one; and, seriously determining whether to remain even on a Cat 3 with a direct hit of the eye. The storm surge here is expected to be 7'-11'. While both Albermale and Palmlico Sounds are quite large and will buffet enormous amounts of surge, we're also expected to receive 15" of rain - this is phenomenal. I noted while tracking this from a tropical depression, it has all the earmarks of Hurricane Floyd - which was enormously devastating. We'll be following the track, speed, and pressure very, very closely tomorrow before determining whether to head inland. Yikes.

board up and get out. If the storm does tear off the roof what are you going to do about it if your there?? Nothing is what your going to do because there is nothing you can do in 130mph winds and 7ft of water. Board up and get out.

I've got two TomCats on the hard about 8 miles inland from the Potomac and about 25 miles North of the Ches. Bay. Sally and I are scheduled to fly out of Richmond at noon or so on Sunday, the storm should be by here by then. My only worry is getting out to a main highway and around any downed trees. We have a motel room near the airport on Saturday night and if IRENE doesn't turn a little more, we'll bail out of the river area on Saturday afternoon. Whole house (autostart) generator, two smaller generators are ready to go with plenty of fuel. House sitter will be here, well protected watching :dog and :cat :cat :cat :cat .
