Hurricane Harvey

Yup, Jim and the Blonde and their kitty, hang out in Corpus. And there are probably others.

Prayers for safety for all.

Jim is out of that area--maybe will come up--but is place is as prepared as can be...

Our thoughts are with any who are in that area. Jim said that there was a possibility of winds of excess of 100 knots at his place tomorrow PM. Also the highest surge and high tide were going to be close to the same time. But the path and intensity can change. A few years back we had one go from a 2 to a 5 overnight and then hit as a 3.

Such a deal, we have Hurricane Harvey down south, and Port Harvey up north, and both of them are causing headaches now. (see this thread:

http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t= ... sc&start=0

and see which one you can do something about.

Jim, Keep your head down, shutters closed and double rope all your double ropes.

I know, you are all covered. :thup

PS: This post is my equivalent of a "Harvey Convention".

Thanks for thinking of us, and the PM well-wishes. We are about 1,500 miles from home, traveling with our motorhome. Before we left home, we had everything battened down, hurricane shutters down, photo and temp/humidity monitors on in the house.

There has been a dredge operation going on for months now on our island. When the dredge blocked our neighbor's canal (he lives across the street from us, but on a different canal), we have let him use our dock this summer. I thought he would move his 36' catamaran to a "hidey-hole" or spider-web it in the middle of the canal. Nope. Found out yesterday that it is tied to our dock, still. With the predicted 100+ mph winds in our area (170 miles south of where the hurricane will make landfall), I can't imagine our dock will come out unscathed.

Joan said, "Hope that boat doesn't blow onto our house!" Swell, I hadn't thought of that. :disgust

The house withstood Hurricane Dolly in 2008 with only some cosmetic damage. With Harvey, we will be on "the dry side" of the storm, with only 2 to 6 inches of rain expected. Storm surge may be an issue... our house is at the "high point" on the island: 7 foot elevation. The house has been built to TDI (Texas Department of Insurance) specs.

Nothing more that we can do, except watch it roll in, like everyone else. The entire southern Texas area is low-lying, so flooding is going to be an on-going issue in many areas. Our lot is slightly sloped, and the house designed so water can run through under it.

My hope is that there are no lives lost, and we don't have to go back to serious repairs. Stuff can be replaced. The media talks about "no major hurricane in the area in many years"... for those of us who live in south Texas, Hurricane Dolly caused major wind and water damage and really hurt the local economy for several years. There was still local inland flooding two months later. Harvey is bigger and badder. Our area won't get a direct hit as we did during Dolly, but the damage potential is likely worse.

For the record, we don't live in or near Corpus Christi - our home is in the Port Isabel/South Padre Island area, about 170 miles south of Corpus. (about 140 nautical miles by water)

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

As an update: this morning, the weather weasels revised the wind predictions in our area... downward. Looks like Harvey will make landfall just north of Corpus Christ as a Cat 3 storm. Our area has a long list of weather advisories (Wind, Rain, Storm Surge, Local Flooding, etc), but they have dropped the wind from 101 mph as a high to 62 mph, with the duration of over 50 mph being around 12 hours.

We are breathing a bit easier after this latest update, but the next 12 to 24 hours will be "watch from afar and hope for the best." The news/conditions for the areas north of us have not be revised down, so I am guessing the center of the storm is becoming even more defined. Not good for those in the path.

Jim, Prayers for a good outcome for you (and all) in that path. My mistake on the Corpus reference. I should have known you would be in the beautiful part of the southern tip.
