How far would/did you drive for a C-Dory?

We just got back from driving over 3,000 miles round trip during the Thanksgiving week to Minnesota to buy a 2000 16' Angler from Allan Scholbrock. Btw, Al Scholbrock is a terrific guy and I welcome his soon to be (if not already) affiliation with the C-Brats. It appears a 22 Cruiser may be in his future plans. Even though the primary reason was to buy the C-Dory, we had a great time visiting the great Smokey Mountains on the way back where I enjoyed hiking a small part of the Appalachian Trail which winds all the way from GA to ME. The new-to-me C-dory will be named "C-Critter" and will be a semi-permanent attachment to my Winnebego RV. We will also be spending 10 days during Christmas camping in the Florida Keys including Bahia Honda State Park (Big Pine Key, FL) and John Pennekamp State Park (Key Largo, FL) in case there are any C-Brats heading to the Keys for the holidays. Snorkeling, scuba diving and lobstering will be the order of business.

Two trips from Wyoming to Vancouver, BC in Dec and Jan. First trip trouble with sellers bank stopped deal. Second trip blew motor in Van. Arrived home in Wy with used C-Dory, new pick up and -12 degrees F. Could have easily been -30 to -40 degrees. 3800 + miles total.

Fairbanks to Seattle, WA. 1 time.................4,600 miles R.T.
Fairbanks to Oympia, WA. 1 time...............4,750 miles R.T.
Fairbanks to Oak Harbor, W. 1 time...........4,500 miles R.T.

Total miles...............13,850

Geez! Our NC to MD trip was only 900miles RT....if we ever sell our Angler I'm gonna leave out that "will deliver" offer.

Capt. Mac -
Beautiful looking boat and r.v. -- looks like a great rig for a fine life ashore and afloat. The miles you have driven for the boat are just the beginning -- have a great time with her.

Almost 2600 miles one way from deep south Texas to Auburn, WA to pick up the boat. In July... passing through Phoenix, then Palm Springs (with temps topping out at 119º)... up the Pacific Coast Highway (fighting the hordes fleeing the heat in LA)... and finally up to some cool 90s in Washington (where it was in the middle of their "heat wave"). And, as Bill said, "just the beginning"... that little drive has led to lots more miles of cruising adventures... meeting great people and seeing spectacular sights along the way.

Congrats, Capt Mac, and sending out wishes for some great cruising on land and water.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Jeez I feel bad for how easy it was to get mine  - Kenmore to Kent and back just 64 miles. Even if I add in the trips to the boat show and a couple of trips to the factory when it was being built, all the travel associated with the purchase is less than 500 miles.

Of course it's not the amount travel to get it that's important, it's the amount of travel in it once you have it. Congrats - I hope you have as much fun putting miles on the boat!

I know we don't take the prize for the shortest trips, somebody in Kent, Auburn, Renton, etc., probably owns that distinction - but Fall City to Kent the first time, Fall City to Auburn the second time, about 30 miles - 60 mile round trips!

Seattle to Martinez, Ca. (Bay Area) via air; met with seller/checked her out/test ride on river; rented a U-Haul truck to pull her back to Seattle. This was for our first Dory, the 22' Cruiser Westward. Mike.

Great Looking Rig...and looks to be ready for travel!! Enjoy your time down in the Keys... and, do keep us posted on the fun and the lobsters! Once you get back home and gigg'n again, I'd love to come down.

As far as the trip(s)...and focusing on the ones to see/but the C-Dory boats... Wow... I would have to agree with some of the others...

The fun and the trips really begin once we get these boats and start making gatherings and trips with them.... but, it is raining and let's see...

Just to see my 1st CD:

Montgomery, AL to Baltimore twice... because the first trip they had sold the one I wanted to see and had to go back a couple of months earlier

Montgomery, AL to Crystal River FL : 3 times...to see the TC24, the 19Angler & the 2nd Generation CD25, and the 21' Ranger Tug & Martini boats.. Man, I sure miss Mike Shotwell and his crew. Great folks

Coco Beach, FL to Kingsland, FL area to see one for sale
Montgomery, AL to Kingsland, FL area to get it with tow vehicle and back

Montgomery, AL to Tampa FL to get the 18 Angler and back

Montgomery, AL to Tampa to deliver the TC24 & back

Montgomery AL to Oak Harbor WA, ... 3 times just for getting boats 2 of which were C-Dory.. One of those trips was a flight so not much driving between Seattle & Oak Harbor...

And about 2 other trips during Jeff Messmer's days to see boats in production, but I flew for those trips

WOW it starts adding up...and this does not even count the trips to different places in the US just to have fun and make gatherings and parties with C-Brats... Sort of a way of life I guess.... And ain't it fun!! Why is that Johnny Cash song "I've Been Everywhere Man" starting to play in my head???

Gotta get in the shower and will do some math later... 29th Anniversary celebration day today...and the day is not until next weekend on the 9th of Dec.... but, again,.... I will be traveling with a C-Brat again...playing with his C-Dory this trip... just from Nashville to St. Louis and back...

Great topic, and again... great looking rig!

Front door to dealer, back to front door a hair over 13 miles. Cut the distance in half to get to the factory and back.

We went from upstate NY to Saint Louis Mo. To purchase "Plan-B" This was the first 25 cruiser made by Scot Reynolds and is still the boat shown when you view the C-Dory web site under 25 cruisers. It was signed by all the employees .

WOW Chuck, That's a collectors edition.

OK now, I think I'm on the other end of the spectrum. Sequim to Carlsborg, 5 miles one way. So 10 miles RT and oh yes, I had to go back and get the boat after we completed the purchase process. 20 miles total but I agree with Roger's, (and many others on this site I think) It's:

Of course it's not the amount travel to get it that's important, it's the amount of travel in it once you have it. Congrats - I hope you have as much fun putting miles on the boat! Roger on the SeaDNA

So Capt Mac, That's a fine looking Combo and I do hope to get to cross wakes at some point in our great country. And if not, I will be looking forward to your travel tails on the site,

Harvey

Thanks for the kind words, CaptMac! I can say exactly the same about CaptMac. He is a fine gentleman and it was a pleasure doing business with him. If any of you ever need an example of an excellent Bill of Sale, contact me or CaptMac. His offer, together with two $500 checks to hold the boat, and finally the Bank Cashiers Checks to make payment was professionally and thoroughly done. After all, CaptMac is a realtor. He knows this buying and selling business.

This isn't CaptMac's first, nor I suspect, his last C-Dory purchase. He knows these boats, and I surely envy "C-Critter's" new life -- snorkeling, lobster bully netting, flounder gigging, and cruising the waters in the great state of Florida. If you haven't done so, make sure to check out CaptMac's Flounder Gigging website. He charters trips - fascinating stuff. Also, google "lobster bully netting" - I had a blast reading about that sport in the Florida Keys.

I wish CaptMac would have included the photo of us finalizing the transaction, me with check in hand, he giving the camera a thumbs up. Don't be shy, CaptMac - folks enjoy seeing those photos.

We owned "C-Critter" (CaptMac's name) for exactly one year. We enjoyed the boat, but CaptMac is right - we are looking to move up to a 22 Cruiser.

This is my post right after CaptMac purchased the 16 Angler dtd Sat, 24Nov07:

"Capt Mac of Amelia Island, FL just picked up the 16 Angler. He recently sold his 22' cruiser ("Blue Manatee") to the folks from Durango, CO. He wanted to get into a smaller boat. May even use the 16' Angler for his fish chartering business -- flounder gigging and lobster netting. Capt Mac drove up from Amelia Island, FL to Rochester, MN (where I am visiting my daughter) to pick up this boat. That's 1362 mi one way to buy a 16' boat. Amazing!!! He gave me a check, we shook hands, hooked up the boat and trailer, and he and his wife are on their way back to Florida!! He picked up the boat in his brand new 29' Itasca Impulse motorhome.

Congratulations to Capt Mac.

Thanks again to C-Brats for making this type of transaction happen.
Seasons Greetings to all. "
