How did you fare in the East Coast storm?

How did everyone make out?

I awoke this morning to find a tree right on top of Napoleon. Radar is gone, structural damage, window frames bent, etc. Ugh...let's hope insurance works.....

Sorry to hear that, Matt. Even though this is why we buy insurance, the uncertainty of the situation is unnerving. Be sure to document everything. When we had a sailboat damaged by a storm that rolled through the marina where we kept the boat, our biggest concern was who could do the repairs so that the value of the boat wasn't affected. The insurance company allowed us to put off the repairs until we could get the boat to a factory authorized repair place over 1,000 miles away.

Hope the process goes as easy as possible for you.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Wow! That's awful, Matt.

Lots of snow on Hunky Dory, which hasn't yet been covered for the winter. So, I'm on my way out to shovel the boat. Don't know if the trailer can take the weight.

Here in Sea Isle City had a good high tide Sat. morning-boat was in water but rode it out with no problems-Wind began to shift to the west Sat. evening so the next high tide was not as bad-wind was pretty good for a while-usual flooding on the usual streets-did not loose power and saw no snow -snow west and north of Sea Isle City-today sunny and cool day with moderate breeze-Sorry to here about boat damage-Rick thought you were in Moorehead City??

from wikipedia "HAARP has been blamed by conspiracy theorists for a range of events, including numerous natural disasters. Scientists have commented that HAARP is an attractive target for conspiracy theorists because "its purpose seems deeply mysterious to the scientifically uninformed"

I worked with one of the drumers in placerville for a while . great guy.

Well it was a long day with the chain saw cleaning up. It looks a little less scary with the tree removed and a closer inspection. I found two points of impact damage on the fiberglass where there was impact but only on the cabin of course. There were no broken windows, engines were not touched, and the tree was touching the ground on both sides of the boat clearly distributing the load. (I learned this when I was cutting it down). It could have been MUCH worse.

Called insurance agent - said I will be covered but will need to go through the process of having an inspector come out, etc. So I will proceed and get her repaired and back to ship shape ASAP.

That's bad Matt, but as you said, could have been worse. Let us know how the insurance process goes. Glad too, it was near the end of the boating season for you (or maybe AT the end since she was on the trailer!). No snow here near the CBay, 1.45" of rain though, had it been snow, would have been a bunch... Cold here this AM though, 32degrees!

I had a good sized branch hit the shed. It missed "Ma Belle" by 5 feet.
Being lucky works every once in a while.
Lost power for 36 hours and just got it back this morning @ 9am.

Happy halloween!

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. Sorry to hear about your challenges as well.

The process is moving right along - Napoleon will be moved to a repair facility Saturday for inspection and then work shall proceed.

Sorry to hear of the damage to your boat. Keep us posted on the insurance claim and how the company responds. Long Beach Island had strong wind and flood tide on Saturday and fortunately the wind did shift westerly and allow the inlets to dump some bay water. C Otter is still in the water and fought her mooring ropes all day Saturday and into Saturday night.

Sorry to hear how you entertained being on the hard with Napolean. I'm glad it was not as serious as it could have been; especially, if it had occurred in the early spring, like the March winds. Hopefully you will be back in business for the season.

Here in my area of Va. Beach it was just a heavy rain storm and some gusty winds.

Hopefully the RADAR system & display, along with the other equipment, can be restored. Thankfully nobody was hurt, stuff can be replaced.

If I may ask, who is the carrier and did you have to have a marine surveyor involved?

My policy is with Travelers. I'm not required to have a marine surveyor but I will have a highly referred custom boat fiberglass company do the repairs. This company apparently works with manufacturers for custom work, hurricane repairs, etc. All my repairs are the cabin - luckily nothing to do with the hull, engines, etc.

In my experience a marine surveyor would be required by an insurance company when you go to insure a (new to you) boat more than 5 years old.

So far so good - claim is opened - shop will pick up my boat Saturday morning to take to their yard for inspection and repair estimate. The repair company is on a first name basis with the Travelers claim inspector (or whatever the title is of the person who decides how much they will pay). This is new territory for me so I reached out to some people for referrals and spoke with the owner of the repair company before I decided to go with them. I'll let you guys know how it progresses.

Hi Matt;
I was looking at your album and came across a pix of a vessel named the "Edward Rowe Snow". that had its name changed to "RITA".

I worked with and knew E.W.Snow when I was growing up in Weymouth. I have many tales of him from when I worked for the Weymouth Harbor Master as a deck hand in the 50's.

I have a collection of his books that are autographed, first & second editions. I visited the room set aside at a museum in Hull, MA dedicated to him. I don't know if it is still there.

I first knew him as "The Flying Santa Claus". He would deliver XMAS gifts to the lighthouse keepers along the NE coast from ME to CONN from a Piper Cub. He would fly over the facility and parachute the gifts for the families; especially the children.

My wife and I live in Connecticut, and this was the worst storm with respect to power loss that we have seen since the ice storm of 1972. We've been without power since Saturday afternoon, and power will probably not be restored for several more days. Ironically, any C-Brats on the Connecticut shoreline were not affected by power outages and high winds. (p.s., we're running on generator power right now.)

I did my homework and found a respected shop for my repairs. The owner took me on a tour of the facility to show me works in progress. There were cored boats that ran aground HARD with large holes in their hulls for example. (Great to see he had experience with cored boats). He had several large bays for various stages of work.

I also learned this shop does all the paintwork for MJM Yacht company. These are fancy small motor yachts built right here in Boston (http://www.mjmyachts.com/). I looked at them until I found out the prices

More importantly, he did a walk around Napoleon with me and then another walk around inspection prior to the insurance company visit. He said all the damage was close to the point of impact in the cabin top - no damage to the hull. PHEW! The fact that she was on a trailer and branches were touching the ground on both sides means that a lot of the load was absorbed/transferred to the ground.

I look forward to seeing the final product and to get her back ship shape!
