Hi kids. Went out to fish today, motor running great. Started for home, checked trim,a little high so trimmed it down. Sputtered a bit and died.Wouldnt turn over and motor trim wont work.Everything else works.Batteries have full charge.Rev limiter lite flashes rapidly and a high pitch squeel with ignition on, all out when turned to start. Any ideas where to look appreciated. Vern/Cdog

Oh ya I have a 2004 suzuki DF70 Vern/C-Dog

Check battery connections to be sure they are tight, and check fuses on engine.

I will remind everyone to use only nuts and lock washers on batteries.

Check the fuse, too! You could have blown one if there was corrosion in the electrical system, or as Matt mentioned, the battery connections/nuts!

I'm betting on a bad ground on the start battery! At least you HAD a kicker!! :thup

Maybe high pressure fuel pump [aka vapor separator]. They come on with ignition .
If not battery connection ,might listen under the cowl to see where squeal is coming from .

Also check the battery cables on the engine side. Inspect the wire and lugs, clean the terminals (or posts) and add di-electric silicone grease and tighten the bolts. Good time to check the terminal covers are intact, if cracked then replace

Thanks for the replies kids.Im off to sacramento valley this morning to walk my youngest down the isle and see the grandbabies.Ill start hunting for those fuses and cleaning and greasing all contact points on my return. The squeel comes from the tach in association with the rapid blinking of rev limiter light. Electricity and I dont get along well. Maybe I should get a water buffelow and start fishing from an ox cart. That new hi-trust kicker sure paid its way as I was 6 miles downhill in heavy fog and nobody around. I still had power to everything including elect start kicker and I carry a lowrance pocket gps in case I ever lose cabin power. Knowing where you and the wash rocks are is always a good thing. Kickers can save your bacon. On my 22' Classic I had to pull my anchor with a buoy in 150' of water with 600' of line out.
It did it but slowly. Then 10 miles back to shore all on a 1977 Johnson 15hp 2 stroke.
I hugged that old engine after.

I hugged that old engine after.

I had a 1987 long shaft version of that motor on my present C--Dory, and a 1988 short shaft on a 12 foot Gregor aluminum boat.

Best damn motor I've ever owned in that size class!

Bulletproof & progressively designed over several decades!

KIDS?? Thanks Vern but I did what you're doing years ago. About time to walk one of the Grandbabies of MINE down the aisle. :disgust

Hope you have a great wedding!! And hug that kicker for us!!

Charlie

Ya,kids! We dont have jobs and all we do is play.Well kindof! Hug the kicker?I kissed that kicker! It was pretty lonely in the heavy fog.I saw nothing and nobody till I got to round rock and the jetty. Best company I could have. Vern/C-Dogs

Hi kids. Back from the wedding and that hot valley weather. Worked on the boat, results mixed. Fuses were ok. Tried tilt switch and heard a click in ecm module, wiggled it ,tried again and motor tilted. Tried to start, heard a click and back to square 1,no tilt, no start and no more click. all contacts on motor clean and tight. Pulled 3 way switch and contacts clean, took them loose and wire brushed and greased them. In pulling 50 amp breaker I spun the stud and broke breaker.Checked tilt,it works again, hit starter and she starts instantly as she always did. So good news and bad. Shes running but im not sure why.Off to get a new breaker. Ill make sure the kicker is warm and ready and stay closer to home on a test run soon. Thank you all for your replies, like the kicker you make me feel not so alone. Vern/C-Dog

Pretty good chance that the breaker was already bad. Your cleaning it just showed up the weakness. These do go bad (as do many other electrical contact items on boats).

Im baffeled. I broke the breaker before I cleaned the switch. After I cleaned the switch everything was fine and there was no breaker in the boat. The breaker runs the house, the motor worked fine without it so I doubt it was the breaker. Go figure. Maybe it just healed up.Self healing electronics, Im up for that as an electrical idiot. If all goes well for awhile, ill call it good, but ill still keep the kicker warm and whisper sweet nothings in its ear just to be on the safe side. Vern/C-dog

Well....I had a 1970 SS Chevelle that had self healing electronics too. One night the horn was on for about a half an hour or so and I was trying to figure out why. It was so odd as the car was just in the garage and then suddenly the horn is blaring. After some time, it stopped for some odd reason while I was jiggling wires and I don't think I did anything to stop it. Interestingly, for the next ten years I owned the car, never did it again....Go figure....I hope you have the same results.
