Help needed, taking on water in the bow area!!!

Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone out there in c-dory land have ever taken on water in the bow area. Small amount of water stays in the space underneath the v-birth. Has anyone ever had a similar problem? Any answers or solutions will be helpful.

Don't really know where the water is coming from. Looked for holes but can't find any. Was wondering if the bow of the boat is foam filled. Could water be accumulating inside the bow cavity and then somehow leaking into the cabin? :crook

Any info is greatly appreciated,
Jackie

There have been a few instances of similar leaks. Sometimes from screws installed to hold the brass keelguard on that were too long; sometimes from water intruding through the clamshell vent in the anchor locker. There has been quite a bit of discussion about this on the site but i cannot recall if any referred to a 25. in my 22 I was able to pull up the plug at the entrance to the Vee berth and check for water, that area is foam filled so the plug was a bear to get up but a wide putty knife did the job.

Good luck.

In the earlier 25's the water tank was under the V berth--it may be aft currently. If so, then there is foam under the V berth. Water can get behind the foam, and collect. Two places to look--one is the screws from the brass strip on the stem, the other is the lowest point of the anchor well. In some boats, this was not completely glassed over. Hopefully your dealer will stand behind the boat--if not contact C Dory. That should be covered under warantee. Look in the anchor locker, take out the anchor, and visualize the very bottom of the locker to see if there is any water can get into the liner which is over the V berth. If it looks as if there is a void here, then fill with epoxy and filler, then put a couple of layers of glass cloth over this, beded in epoxy.

I'm not familiar with the 25 cruiser. However, my TC255 has water in the starboard sponson. It took some time but, with help from another TC owner, who had the same problem we figured out what the problem is. The anchor locker is connected to the side lockers the water from the anchor rode and any water that we take over the bow will enter through the hole for the windless. The comparments are not sealed properly. Instead of draining overboard it leaks into the sponsons. I spoke to Sportcraft Marina and they had a tomcat in for service and it had the same problem. I wouldn't doubt if all tomcats have the same problem. The fix is to seal all seams and drain holes with 5200 and drill a hole in the anchor locker to allow it to drain downward. Sounds like a design flaw to me.

We had a similar problem with the Marcia Jane. The Venture 23 does not have the brass stem screws, but last month on our first trip to Catalina Island, we had water aplenty traveling from the bow area back through the cabin.

Check the rear of the anchor locker! Ours had not been sealed and water that came in through the anchor locker drain, drained back and traveled all along the port side. Sportcraft Marina, my dealer, contacted the factory and they shipped me enough 3M 5200 to seal the seams at the rear of the anchor locker. Problem solved in the matter of a week. The repair worked and we're leak free. :D

I couldn't be happier with our new boat! I had a rear station installed by the dealer and I am very pleased to see how it works for chasing and fishing those kelp paddies in the Southern California waters.

Good Luck!

When we put the boat on the trailer after three months in the water, we had saltwater seeping from under the v-berth onto the cabin floor. I was thinking worst case scenarios -- like stem guard leak -- for several reasons: length of time in the water, lack of prior problem, lack of significant time actually boating, and a visual inspection when the boat was new did not suggest the common anchor locker problem. Long story short, it was the common anchor locker problem with no suggestion of stem guard involvement.

I will be installing a retrofit pipe in the hull opening when I receive it from the Outboard Motor Shop. I assume it is a factory item. In the meantime, I used a hole saw to enlarge the hole in the v-berth sole where the foam was pumped in. I found a gap between the hull and the foam which I think to be a good thing given the situation. I used a wet/dry vac to remove about three gallons of water that probably originated from sea water coming into the locker through the hull opening and deck water coming through the windlass opening. I ran a heavy duty hair dryer for several hours a day for a couple of days into the hole I cut, and it seemed to dry out very well. I will be enlarging the hole further and installing an inspection cover.

Hindsight says, given the experiences of others, I should have assumed the problem in spite of no apparent gap and done the fix before I got the water.

Regards to all,

Absolutely amazes me. Our Hunky Dory was a 2000. We had the keel guard and the anchor locker leak. You would think the company has had enough time to fix those problems. Someone should be responsible to check those two items on every boat before it goes out the door. The bottom of the anchor locker would drain under the v-birth before it would reach the scupper. It should not take a rocket scientist to figure out how to rectify those proplems once and for all. I poured a pail of water into the anchor locker and none came out the scupper. Pull one screw out of the lower keel guard and watch the water come out.

Both problems are easily fixed, just got to know where the water comes from. Do they put an inspection plate on all 22's in the v-birth area now?

Well, I think the lack of ability in fixing some of the common problems, and the anchor locker leak is the best example, was a factor in having to sell the company. When they resealed Journey On's anchor locker, I mentioned that getting it right in production was a lot cheaper that fixing it after delivery. They fixed Journey On, but I guess they were disconnected from the production guy. I thought it must be a deliberate act to miss so many, and it would be easy to catch and fix. He must of worked there from 2000 thru at least 2007.

I too had v berth storage indoor pool. pulled and sealed stemguard screws, redrilled hole under clamshell and inserted a plastic tube coated with 5200 into anchor storage. no more water in the last 4 trips. Vern/C-Dog
