Head Gear (as in hats)

I need a new hat for wearing on and around the boat. Number 1 priority is sun protection. Recommendations are welcome. Any particular hats that you like for your boating?

How about this one??

My favorite are Tilley Hats www.tilley.com they are a little pricey but offer excellent sunprotection are light, comfortable and important to me have a chin string front and back which can be used in the wind or tucked under when you don't need it.

I've had the same Tilley (T-3) dark green canvas hat for many years and have worn it everywhere. It is faded but otherwise as good as new. Alternate favorite is a 30 year old Stetson fur felt hat with the stains and patina that make it better than new. Baseball type hats fill the gaps.

Try pithhelmets.com. Made from real pith (cork) and fabric covered, you can dunk them in water, and the evaporation keeps you cool. They also float. They offer great sun protection and when you knock your head on the cabin, it offers protection. Both my wife and I have them. They are great walking hats too. Since they have little helmet liners in them, they stay off your head and leave just a little air for extra coolness and comfort.

I have a Tilly too, but find it hot in the humidity. I prefer the pith helmet and my Greek fishermans cap.

The Tilley hats are sure bumping the applause meter. I will check them, and the pith helmets, too. I'm also reconsidering Charlie's suggestion, if I can figure out a way to get into the v-berth with it on. Thanks for the suggestions.

I frequently wore my Tilley when sailing; still have it, but don't wear it that often. In the cabin of the C-Dory, I don't often wear a hat, thanks to the protection the cabin affords. The Tilley still goes with us on Wild Blue, though.

You could also use it to bathe your pup in the cockpit!

Dito, dito, dito on the Tilleys--- I have four---- don't know why, because they never wear out. Not only good sun protection, but you can wash them all you want. :thup :thup :thup :thup

I also have a Tilley, and wore it more when sailing. I like a lightweight hat, and have a Columbia, which has light mesh around the crown, with single layer on the top, and a brim broader than the tilley--great for the summer. For wet weather, I have an OR in grey--which is Gortex lined on the brim and top/crown--the sides will velcro up, and it is good rain protection as well as sun. All have "strings".

Most of the time in the boat, it is a single billed cap. Up north-this is replaced by a billed cap with fleece ear flaps (at night, even in the summer--softie from Florida gets cold ears--again with Gortex on this cap-)

My vote would be for a military Boonie hat. Growing up "caucasian" in Hawai'i I realized the value of good sun protection; I just hope I was't too late. Anyway, they have lots of sun protection, chin strap, comfy, washable....and cheap at any military surplus sotre.

I had one since my son was in grade school and it finally gave out 2 yrs ago. I bought a new one. When my son (now 25+) saw me wearing it, he was like "NOOOOOOOOO!"

Being the cheapo that I am, I purchased 2 canvas hats from wally world ($9.97 each) that have snaps to hold the sides up, and a draw string. I can stuff them anywhere without worrying. No mesh, but they do have brass vents.
I typically have the sides snapped up unless it's raining.
Very comfortable, and if it's really hot...I wet the hat.

Like the looks of the Tilly and the OR, Broader brim the better. That's what my dermatologist says any way. I just can't get used to the not being able to see up and out. (Military life was easy, it was having to always wear the cover (hat) that made me have to get out. Have a dozen or so baseball types, but what ever hat I have usually spends the day on the dash or on the corner of the plotter display.

My best vote,
My C-Brat hat with "SleepyC" and the crossed flags.
