Growing Family and Lodging in the San Juans

Hello,

A little while back the family and I thought we wanted a bigger boat to grow into, so we sold Pingu. After a series of real estate deals, we ended up with a cabin on Harstine Island so we held off on purchasing the bigger boat. Now we're contemplating getting something smaller - around 22 feet, that we could use for day trips and fishing.

My question...

We're a family of 4 (two little boys who keep growing) and sleeping on something 22' or smaller would be a tight squeeze, so... Are there places in the San Juans/ Gulf Islands that we could boat to as a family, but stay in a cabin?

I believe Snug Harbor http://www.snugresort.com/index.html is such a place, but I've never been. Are there other such places and if so, what are they?

Thank you all in advance,

-Sarge

I like the condos and cabins at deer harbor. I also like the looks of west beach resort. the Lieber Haven Resort and Marina Orcas Island Marina, smugglers villa on the north shore of orcas by the air port looks interesting.

There are any number of "Resorts" in both the San Juans and Gulf Islands which have both motel type of rooms, hotel rooms and cabins. For example Deer Harbor Marina, has several rentals nearby. But I have seen many cabins for rent. Google "San Juan Islands Cabins for rent"--and you will find a large number. Same is true all of the way up the line into BC.

If you have a dinghy, there's also options for camping on shore at many of the state park islands. A few even have docks (if you get there early enough). You'd have to carry a tent and sleeping bags but that would be a cheaper option relative to a motel or cabin. As the kids get older, they can stay in the tent and you and the wife can can have the warm and dry cabin to yourself (and if they misbehave, you can always slip off in the middle of the night.  ).

Roger brings up a good point. We took James and his friends a few times and had them sleep in the camp grounds on Jones while Susan and I took the boat for the night. As your boys get older that might be a solutions.

Sarge,

We have been in snug harbor in a cabin a few years back and it was fine. I believe they have been renovated since then.

The entrance can be fun at low tide. The big rock in the middle is bigger than you think so you may end up planting 'taters if you are not careful.

Have also stayed at Long Harbor on Saltspring and at a lovely house right near the pasage between N and S pender islands.

There are lots of them and the off season rates can be quite good. We tended to look for a central spot and use it as a base for land and sea day trips.
