gritty fine black mold

Brent, is this the mix:

"Miner recommends first diluting one cup of household bleach in one gallon of water and then adding one cup of white vinegar."

That sounds like a reasonable, usable volume. Then apply with a sponge or rag, not a spray bottle.

Thank you.

Miner's short summary of the use of acid to increase the antimicrobial action of ordinary household bleach is good for laboratories and spaces with lots of ventilation. Or, folks equipped with masks which prevent free chlorine from entering the lungs.

I would not use bleach and acid mixtures in a confined space such as a V berth without serious protection of my lungs.

Diluted, as the later posts describe, the bleach concentration is much reduced, which is much safer.

Anyone using these mixtures with acid or vinegar added to bleach solutions should test them outdoors in a well ventilated area before going further. Once you have had a significant exposure to a gas such as chlorine or sulfur dioxide or similar, the effects can last for days, weeks. Been there, done that. Do not recommend the experience to anyone.

Whoa, at the risk of hijacking the thread... George (Kerri On), you've been living aboard for 6 1/2 months? Did I read that right?

If so I'd like to hear more about it :)

Brent, Dave, Boris, Bob et al,

Thanks for all the help. SleepyC is sparkling clean and smells pretty clean too, but not like a new boat. No bad fumes and for a mask...  I put an extra longer hose on my CPAP mask, set it out on the bow and turned up the flow. Sort of like working of a hooka.

Thanks again. This is a really great site with really great folks.

I am going with Mailbox101 (no name) on page one of this interesting link. Get rid of the moisture/humidity...and there is a bunch of it.

My thoughts, and knowing Tom & Susan's set up... is to simply plug in a dehumidifier and let it run on the boat. Send the drainage into the sink drain, but, stick a like-sized plastic tube into the drain exit point as to take the drainage away from the side of the boat and let the drip fall harmlessly down to the ground out of the little tube. Just needs to be a couple of inches as to keep the drip off the side of the boat. Then, like others, I like to prop up my cushions, open the hatches/doors and keep a some small fans of what ever type moving the air around. That takes care of the boat in the storage mode. Then, when you return from an outing, just leave the boat set up the same way. Don't forget to hang those floor rugs up to allow the water tracked in to dry out also. I just hang mine in some manner from the hand rails on the ceiling. I would love to find a small dehumidifier to just leave on the boat and even run at night when it is too cold to run the AC. There is just a whole lot of moisture in our cabins of our enclosed boats. We gotta get it gone!

Now, if your storage set up does not allow for Mr. Electricity to help... or you are going to go on an extended cruise... go back and look at some of the other ideas. Tom & Susan have the electricity where they store the boat(s)/RV & stuff.

I thought why not do a search and see what I can find.. there are some smaller ones out there small enough to move around on the boat and leave on the boat while traveling. Great you brought this up! Now I have another must have "tool" for the boat to get...and research some more.

and a wireless monitor too!!!!

Thanks, I added 12 feet of hose, put the CPAP out into the fresh air, and didn't think of an extra filter. Could smell nothing but fresh air. That full face hood might have been nice.

I do keep a dehumidifier, (aluminum, round, electric from WM) plugged in when boat is stored. I have 2 now so will be using that combo, one forward one in the cabin. Have not had any mold or mildew, but did get damp on my last trip, from heating the inside up pretty warm. First time for everything I guess.
