Got to meet another C-Brat today...

We put our "nearly real" reg #s in the window and went out today. When we got back late this afternoon, we went out for supper. Right now, Joan is putting more stuff away (we brought a couple more cart-loads from the truck after supper); I am out in the cockpit on the computer, trying to stay out of her way (made it all the way up to 70º here by late afternoon). This schedule is exhausting, but I'm doing what I can to keep up.

That boat was a real treat today. It was in the 60s while we were out; we were comfortable and dry (shorts and t-shirts). I ran the boat out into Puget Sound to get a feel for how she'd take differing sea conditions. About 2' chop was as much as we could find, but the ride was good... Molly the catboat cat slept through most of it, if that gives you some idea. And, yes, it has been worth the wait... plenty of "what do you think"s and lots of smiling today.

Your water here is a LOT different from what we're used to: 15 foot tides, compared to our measley 2'. And every direction you look is spectacular views... but it's all forests, islands, inlets, and mountains - with no sun to give me a direction fix at a glance, it's hard to get an easy landmark. Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely beautiful... but I pity the fool (that's my Mr. T impression) that would head out without a chart... and I sure do like my chartplotter. :wink

We did run into a "situation" with our E-80, with the speed reading about 30-50% low (checked against a known GPS). Any ideas? (also posted this on Dreamer's thread about the E-80) TIA.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Jim,

I've sure enjoyed reading about your travels! It sounds like heaven to me. I'm at least 10 years behind you and sure wish I could retire now!

Enjoy the Sound. There is no place like it on earth and I just love it!

Not sure what the temp was, but definitely somewhere north of "chilly" this morning. I could see my breath! :xseek We fired up the Wallas for the first time... held my breath (no, not so I wouldn't see it) after some of the Wallas comments here... it took a couple minutes... oh, the anticipation... and the red combustion light came on. Heat! It took a few minutes to warm up the cabin... at which point the Blonde said, "Did you ever think you'd need heat again after driving through Palm Springs (119º) last week?" Turning on heat in July - this is the land of infinite variety.

More exploring and boat-learnin' today. We are getting spoiled by all these amenities. :D

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Just be sure the E-80 is displaying SOG (speed over ground). I am not sure what the utility of the speed from the paddlewheel is, I want to know how fast I am "really" going vis-a-vis getting from point A to point 2, and that is the GPS calculated SOG!

Jim..... S W E E E E E T !!!!!!

Glad to know all are enjoying the boat. Spent some time making a single document out of Kasey's Naknek's Summer in Alaska travel log/notes as to be able to take it in like a book. If anyone wants a copy...just drop me an email. After reading his post...and your post.... I am really ready to head back out west....

Great read...and enjoy!!

Olympia often has the biggest temperature swing in the state. It is suppose to get down to 48 Sunday night, so you may want to put an extra blanket on also.
It will probably rain (showers) late today and Sunday then start clearing on Monday. It will be a good time to look for possible leaks on your boat. Mid week it will be in the upper 70’s again and clear.

Pat - The water speed compared to the SOG will tell you the velocity of the water current. Good to know for trolling, and nice to be able to see at a glance whether you're going uphill or downhill.

I think I spotted you this afternoon, Jim. Were you in Balch Passage heading toward Filucy Bay? We were on a mooring buoy at Eagle Island Marine State Park when I saw a CD-25 going between Eagle and McNeil. Got the glasses and saw what appeared to be registration numbers in the window and no name or lettering on the hull, so I'm thinking odds are pretty good it was you. Sorry I didn't get on the radio and hail you - my wife had had a pretty much sleepless night and was napping, so I opted to be kind.
We moved here from Houston nine years ago. Love the summers!

Yep, that was us... taking the scenic tour... mostly just poking around, getting a feel for the new boat. We saw your boat on the mooring - looked mighty tranquil. The Sheriff's boat came up behind us and circled us at Filucy Bay... thought we might get a visit, but they kept going. We have a copy of the notarized Bill of Sale, all the paperwork that we sent our state, some almost real registration numbers, our birth certificates, Molly the catboat cat's shot records, and a secret decoder ring... I'm thinking we're covered in case of a boarding.

Moved from Houston, huh? That is one GIANT step up! :wink The scenery and boating options here are unlimited... and this 20 degree temperature variation from summer to winter is interesting.

Joan is talking about going to Hope Island tomorrow... I'm just the cha... um, cheu... um, driver.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Oh my goodness, we may have to dig out our long pants! :disgust

We signed on here 'till Wednesday. Any chance we'll get to meet the Mrs.?

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Publicly stating that Dave is the nicest guy we've ever met (that wasn't trying to sell us something :wink ) Oh, and you didn't tell us about that "temperature swing" thing when you were telling us about Olympia.
