Hi Tex,

I was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa - downriver from Yankton. Lots of sandbars and snags in the Muddy Missouri. Lewis & Clark Lake is a favorite of ours in that area.

Have fun, travel safe. I'll look forward to hearing about it.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Good to hear from you Tex. Keep us posted as the journey unfolds when you have the time and opportunity. Travel safe and stay out of the mud! Our best to Sharon, Sandpiper, and Pelican. See you guys later in the year.

Ahoy mates !
Enjoy your cruise. I spent some time in and around Sioux City and did a lot of sailing on Lewis & Clark Lake. I was back there a few years ago for a family reunion. It's a beautiful area. The Mo. R. is a fun (and crazy) river. I'm sure you'll have a great time, so keep us posted on your adventures. Happy floating !

Downstream from Yankton the river has the taste of wildness to it that is nonexistent on the channelized river below Ponca State Park. The river is a series of meanders, chutes, and backwaters dominated by sandbars with an occasional heavily-timbered island. The river channel varies in width from a quarter to three quarters of a mile with an average width of a half mile. The depth of the channel varies from ten to twenty feet. Side channels may be just inches deep while scours can create forty- to fifty-foot deep holes.

The Missouri was a very uncivilized river. No pleasure boats, few fishermen, no barge traffic, no locks, no marinas, Pretty much as Lewis and Clark saw it except for a few bridges and occasional town. A sand bar and a campfire every night.
Just what we like.

sounds nice. Last time (and only time) that I saw the Missouri was down around St Josephs, MO on the first of March and the huge chunks of ice were coming down stream.

We paddled 1,300 miles down the Missouri from up in Montana in a double kayak -- a beautiful river with great lakes (we raised a sail on the kayak for the lakes).
Many a fine experience shared. 2 1/2 months after our launch, we hauled out -- had such a fine time, we quit our jobs (that we loved), sold our house and most everything in it and retired. That was the start of our drifting life.

Nice to read about the fine experiences other Brats have had along the river. Glad you had a fine cruise.
