Gas Prices

I bought gas in Pt Charlotte, FL last week for $3.35 for the Suburban and ethanol free (E0) gas for the boat was $4.67 in Punta Gorda.

It is wacky
We need a Wheel of Excuses
Greedy Oil Companies
Weak Government regulatory oversight
Supply and Demand
Exclusive Gasoline selling districts
Speculators
Refinery under repair
Refinery updating equipment
Price Leader which a large gas distributor with many stations lets the prices for their areas and the rest follow

Greedy Gas stations --- some just out of take advantage of the location

collusion

Exactly how crude oil prices effects gas prices
Not all oil is made into gas

World gas prices are not the same

Damage due weather (hurricanes)

Mismanagment

Limited number of gas refineries in the US

oops
off my soapbox

Yesterday paying cash regular, gas w ethanol low price in New Jersey 3.31 point nine. add a dime per gallon if you are using plastic to pay your fuel. Diesel 3.75 point nine.
D.D.

Nice surprise at a central NY marina pump last week. Barretts Marina near the west end of the Cayuga-Seneca Canal at Seneca Lake was selling non-ethanol for $4.499 gallon. We took 60 gallons to pretty well top us off. So nice to know that grain alcohol isn't in the tank doing it's dirty work until we can get back on the boat.

I saw $4.67 a gallon for gas at LaConner a couple days ago. $3.97 for diesel. I'm leaving for Alaska on Friday...any bets on the highest prices I see along the way?

In Europe Honda sells a Diesel Civic that gets over 70mpg...but again it is not allowed into the USA

Gonna do some research on this...

http://www.netcarshow.com/honda/2012-civic_eu-version/

It also is one of the sector's best in performance against low CO2 emissions...

Fuel consumption of only 4.2 litres per 100 km ensures the new Civic is easy on the pocket as well as the environment.

4.2 liters per 100 km=56 mpg (U.S.)

I'd be all over this. So now lets hear why this car is NOT allowed to be imported/sold in the U.S. market.

I'd love to see some diesels from Honda in the US. I've had a Honda Pilot for the last four years and put 108,000 miles on it, totally trouble free. As a college student this car got filled with 7 or 8 people for ski trips, camping trips, etc. Lots of fast, high elevation mountain driving in extreme temperatures, plenty of dirt roads and stream crossings, etc...basically it lived a pretty tough life but never complained. I'm sold on Honda.

The Pilot is going to my little brother now and I need to get a new (probably used) car. As much as I try to like the diesel VWs, the service costs and questionable reliability really turn me off. If Honda brought a diesel car to the US, I'd be among the first in line. If it was a wagon I'd be even more excited.

I suspect they could bring these diesels stateside, but the costs of certifying them here are higher than they think they could make selling them.

Sam, I think it will be the highest in BC perhaps over $6 a gal.  So far, in Southeast Alaska it's lower then Jim's, Friday Harbor report of $5.05.  Almost a month ago in Auke Bay near Juneau it was $4.14,  Hoonah, 4.82 & Sitka just a couple days ago, $4.37.

Ditto. Meredith had a "new" Beetle. That thing was constantly breaking down, being towed to the dealer...and I was not impressed w/ the overall feel of it; it was very "plastic". I'd love the 45+ mpg's of a Jetta TDI, but I'm very leery of any H2O cooled VWs.

In contrast, I've had two Accords and both were solid, well built and dependable. One lasted well into the mid 250K miles before the engine tired. Like I said; if the Civic diesels were here, we'd get one. Meredith would not like the hatchback look, but she'd adjust to it if she could get 55+ mpg out of it.

We bought a Jetta TDI about 7 years ago and have had nary a problem with it. Other than oil changes and tires, it's been pretty good. Sure we've only got around 77k miles on it, but I'm happy with 35MPG city and 44 on the highway.

My little Toyota Echo gets 40-50 MPG (depending on how I'm driving) they truly are an under appreciated toyota model. sold like hot cakes in Canada and other parts of the world, but the prius outshined it here.

Bonus: no one knows how long they actually last, because they just keep on going! 300K and a few 400K and counting on the clock. One fella I know has 300K on the original clutch!

The yaris has the same engine, but the trans was regeared for take off (less MPG's) still a good solid 35-40 though.

Most of the scions also have the 1.5L VVT-i (echo motor) but heavier (nicer) cars and thus a bit less MPG's

My current echo had 225K on it when I plucked it off craigslist for $1500 bucks. Most cars would be long dead, but I knew from experience this one was just getting started. :)

We also have had VW's and Honda's also. For us the cost to own was much lower with the Honda's. Resale value I would bet is much higher with Hondas. No more VW's in our driveway. We had electrical issues and mechanical issues and the cost of service parts etc was whacked out with the VW's. My 07 Civic gets 30 mpg around town and forty mph on the highway without even trying save gas.
Who knows how many times the Honda Accord has been car of the year.
If Honda brings that diesel to this country I would buy one in a second.
D.D.

We got a break and regular fuel dropped to 4.5 a gallon.

With over 6200 miles on the volt the lifetime mpg is 250+. I know i have not purchased 24 gallons of fuel. My electrical limit has gone up to 40 miles. Even my motorcycle friends would drive it.

For a 100 mile jeep trail ride I bought $40 of fuel for the trip. I saw a bear and a deer, explored mines and found black sand but no yellow. It was worth it. Next trip is to diamond creek for a look see. I added a $100 of fuel to the boat 4 trips ago and still have enough for 4 more trips. I can live with that. At least I am able to enjoy my hobbies.

I am glad that fuel is available. I remember having to wait in lines and pay at the time way to much back in the early 70's, and mid 70's.

Have you figured out your use of electricity increase per month yet? It would be more accurate to include that cost as "equivalent" gallons of gas added to your actual gallons purchased. Divide the extra electrical cost by current cost/gallon of gas to obtain equivalent gallons (per month). It would be more of an apples to apples comparison and interesting. Thanks[/quote]
