Fuel burn

Ahoy!

I'm curious what the experience of C-Dory monohull and multihull owners in the 24-25-foot range are.

We recently cruised 540 miles, with some distance run at 22-24 mph and lots of slow sightseeing. Average speed was 12 mph. Our fuel burn was 6.1 gallons per hour or 1.97 miles per U.S. gallon.

What are you burning on your TomCat 24s and 255s and C-Dory 25s?

On my Tom Cat, as measured by the Yamaha fuel flow meters, I range from 1.6 to 2.1 mpg, most often getting 1.8. Bob gets better mileage with his Suzukis, I believe -- one reason why I wish I had gone with those.

I should have noted that we have twin Yamaha 100s on our TomCat 24. Our fuel burn numbers are actuals of fuel poured into the tank.

I don't have fuel flow gauges but from my calculations and fuel used per my fuel gauges I'm getting 2.2 smpg at 22 knots/3400 rpm.

Forgot to mention that I generally get the same mpg from about 16 to 25 mph.

Georgs,
I think that your "mileage" reflects the amount of slow speed running you have done. I do 95% of my running at 25 mph, and get somewhere in the 2.2 miles per gallon. I suspect if I was on a specific long cruise, that it might be greater. But many of our trips are to a specific destination on the ICW, where we may run 200 miles in a 8 hour peroid.

However, the Tom Cat 24 is certainly a lighter, and more streamlined boat. In any case, those are really great numbers--and better than even the C Dory 22's seem to "average". With our C Dory 25--again much of the time was at 17 mpm--and some at displacement speeds, we averaged 3 miles per gallon over 2500 miles the last two summers.

We run a Suzuki DF 200 on our CD 25 and can cruise between 26-31 knots at 4400 rpm with calculated MPG of 2.7. The prop is a Suzuki 3x16x18.5. Speed was variable because of current, most was downsteam on the Illinois and Mississippi, but we went uphill on the Ohio.
Our mileage is estimated and conservative, could be a little better, definitely not worse.

On our recent Lake Powell trip we used 91.7 gallons and traveled 215 miles. Average MPG of 2.344. Most of the running was at 23 to 25 MPH. We did some trolling, using one motor at a time, at 1.5 MPH.

The fuel used was measured by our Floscan gauges. I haven't refueled the boat yet, but normally the gauge is accurate within 1 or 2 %.

Forgive me if this is off topic but it's raining, chilly and generally gucky weather.
Back in the 60's a group of us worked together at Cape Canaveral. One of our co-workers who was a real horse's patootie, bought a new VW beetle. He was proud of it and we were constantly harangued about how great it was (he was a mathematician and kept meticulous records). My friend, T. Willie, lived next door to this jerk. Since most houses on Merritt Island didn't have garages, everyone parked in the carport.
Several nights later, T. Willie slipped over to the house next door and added a couple of gallons of gas to the guy's VW. We continued this for a couple of weeks and we heard daily stories of near-100mpg mileage.
Then the worm turned and T.Willie began sneaking over every night or so and siphoning out a couple of gallons. The stories then changed to tales of woe with the jerk calling the dealership and complaining, writing letters to VW, etc., etc.
The guy finally transferred to another job, moved away and I guess, took great pleasure in seeing his gas mileage return to normal.
Sorry to indulge our members but it's a good story on a rainy morning.
