"Friday Harbor" earthquake

Anyone know how a quake feels in a boat? Not that I want to find out, just how it affects a vessel.

Glad folks are apparently OK. The only thing we feel here on the OBX is a great sunrise!

There was an earthquake this past summer while we were in Friday Harbor. It was a 3.something if I recall (just getting up this morning), centered just north of Spieden Island. People on land said they felt it; we were in the boat in the marina - didn't feel a thing.

As Bill has told us, the PNW is a pretty active area.

I think it depends, and maybe not "logically." I was on a boat (tied to a dock) about 150 miles by water from a 6.8 quake, and -- although I didn't (at the time) connect it with being an earthquake -- I definitely knew something was off. I was standing in the galley and I remember two things that happened simultaneously: I heard/felt a deep rumble that sounded to me as if someone had started a large piece of diesel construction equipment right on the dock (I knew that probably wouldn't be happening, so it did seem a little weird, but I had to ascribe it to something, and that's how it struck me). At the same time I looked out the porthole and saw "funny waves" on the open water to port. They weren't large or threatening, just... recognizably odd.

It was a few hours later that I heard there was an earthquake and connected the two. That thought never crossed my mind as it was happening, but then I'm not from earthquake country.

Sometime within the next year or two there was an earthquake (I don't recall where now), and I read accounts where people who were aboard during it thought their boats were going to sink (I think they were also at a dock) because it was so wild. The boat bucking and rearing, water like a washing-machine, etc. I don't specifically remember where that quake rated on the Richter scale, but I don't remember it being a super-huge one (in comparison) because reading it I thought, "Huh, how different from what I experienced.

The Japanese may know. I suspect even a huge quake is damped out though. its the wave that might catch you
