Free Canadian Lockage Permit is Still "Coming Soon&quot

This is baffling. The Parks Canada site to order free lockage permits for 2017 is still as of 2-20-17 "coming soon."

I also ordered the free Discovery Pass through this site, which supposedly IS available, and I never received it. Do any of our Canadian Brats know what is going on? am I missing something?

Its just you Pat. They don't want you in Canada. LOl

Just another example of big government not getting their shit together. And why would that ? No one is getting fired.

It is nice that they are thinking or having a yearly pass so you dont have to pay every time you get to a moorage or a lock. I thought that most of the locks would be free . Are they all pay to play or are some free? Does it depend on which country you are in?

We received our Discovery Pass a few weeks ago, but the processing took quite awhile. Our request was submitted shortly after the website first offered the pass a few months ago. No doubt the Canadian office involved was deluged with requests, as it is my understanding their computer system crashed due to the demand and you can be sure no additional staffing was available to be dispatched to handle the demand. I would bet they are now working, and have been for weeks, to assure a more effective and responsive system is ready before opening the gates for the mooring and canal passes. We also plan to request these so keep checking...

So I went back and looked at our link and the pass is free. So if its free why do you need a pass??????? Just let everyone thru . Silly government for government sake.

Hey Tom, Good thinking. :thup Just on the money savings alone you could probably run for prime minister and WIN.

Well I know how that meeting went-

government worker " we are going to have free passes for this year so no need to print any passes"

Union boss_ " you mean you are going to take the food out of the mouth of a union printer by not having a printed pass"?

politician " hey we cant do that . if we did the UB will not give me my bride/ campaign donation"

goverment worker. " but if its printed and we dont charge then the voter will have to pay for the " free pass"

UB, PO- " works for us"

On this side of the border we agree with the frustration.
In 2016 those who ordered the passes received a two year pass since it was to be free in 2017. Around 500,000 passes were sold to Canadian and foreigners. By early Jan. 2017, they had received 2 million requests. I guest we all like something for free. God only knows what the count is at now.
The parks system had originally estimated the mailing cost to reach 6 million for the free passes but they totally underestimated the interest.
So you are right, you don't need the prerecorded pass to enter the parks but they wanted to mail out their info pamphlets with the passes. Anybody without a pass when entering will be given the information sheets along with a pass.
I have nothing to do with Parks Canada. This is just what we have been told and that is how I understand it.
I imagine the same will apply to the locks.
Might be a busy time to visit???

So, let me see if I have this right... you're getting the pass for free, but concerned that they aren't delivering fast enough??

When we lived in South Dakota, I needed to register a boat that I bought in December. The Treasurer's Office said, "We don't have the registration stickers for next year."

We were in Texas at the time, and wanted to get the boat launched - I asked, "When will you have them?"

"I don't know - maybe by April."

"April? I need it now!"

"This is South Dakota - are you going to chop a hole in the ice to launch your boat??"

Good point.

It's Canada, Pat. They are friendly there. You are launching in Florida around April 1st. Odds are pretty good you'll be in the water before things thaw in eastern Canada. All in due time.

My daughter in law ordered the Discovery Pass (for parks) the beginning of Jan. They came in the mail last week - so about 7 weeks.

Like Jim said I imagine they will have the lock passes figured out by the time they open in mid May.

Regards, Rob

Pat, I ordered a free lockage permit two months or more ago, and I have received it by mail. The moorage permit is NOT free however. As I remember it is around $10 per foot of boat length. I have not bought a moorage permit. Won't until we go for sure. We are planing to be on the Trent Severn and Rideau canals in August, September and into October.
