Iowa? I'm amazed that people in Iowa would ever have a boat. Is there water there or only corn?

Lots of corn, but a serious bit of water too. The Coast Guard has a 65 footer with a home port in Iowa.

I said much the same thing you did several years ago when my brother, who was in the Coast Guard at the time, told me he was going to be stationed in Iowa.

I always forget large rivers; you don't get much bigger than the Mississippi. Coming from Hawai'i I think of water as the ocean. Live and learn....

I'm the same way. When he told me he was transferring to Iowa I asked him what in the heck the Coast Guard had for him to do in Iowa. He did bring me some nice geodes from there though. :P

I was born in the exotic land of Eye-Oh-Way. I misspent some of the best times of my youth at Lake Okoboji... along with Spirit Lake and several others, known as "The Iowa Great Lakes."

In fact, getting some "helm time" when I was 7 years old on The Queen...

... put the hook in me for the desire to be a captain. Really. We were poor, but my Mother used to like to go to Okoboji, mostly to drink with her friends. She would give me $1 or $2 to "keep myself busy". That money was supposed to take care of entertainment at the amusement park (Arnold's Park) and food. Instead, I would go buy 4 trips on the Queen. It doesn't take long for the crew to get to know you when you are a 7 year old (and, 8, 9, 10, etc) riding repeatedly... by yourself. They invited me into the wheel house... let me blow the horn... even let me drive. Hey, I knew the route.

The highlight of my summers in Iowa.

The Missouri River is on the west border of the state, the Mississippi on the east. Iowa has water.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

As mentioned above, there is water in Iowa. But in addition to that, our boats have wheels :D Iowa is a great central location to strike out N, E, W, or S from :thup

Wasn't it Connie Fisher that sponsored the Iowa gathering's on the Mississippi. I thought it was her and her husband that had bought and sold several C-Dory's, including a 14. Now she is listed as a guest rather than a member. Do I have my members confused?

Our US Navy had a Battleship named The Iowa. (And a class of ships named the Iowa Class Battleships.)

Does that count?

That's a cool story, Jim. I love memories like that.

I imagine if that happened now either some Nosey Nelly would call CPS on your mom and they would investigater her for child "neglect" or you'd have to have a DHS security clearance to go up to the wheel house.

How times have changed....

Don't know if they are still there, but there used to be a Coast Guard Station in Arizona and in Nevada. (Lake Havasu was a small boat station and Searchlight was a radio station. ;-)

Been on IOWA many times! Unfortunately, that turret was the one that had an explosion that killed 32 sailors.

If I remember right, the US Coast Guard has jurisdiction on any water that is navigable, and/or (don't remember which) crosses state lines, or a tributary to such. Columbia and Snake rivers come to mind for Washington and Oregon. Bear Lake for Utah and Idaho, and Great Lakes to name a few. I have heard on occasion, of USCG rescues in some pretty remote areas, not involving the Pacific, Atlantic or Gulf waters.

Maybe someone else has more current or correct info they can refresh us with?

I believe you are correct Harvey. At least that was the case when I was in the USCG before getting out in 1983. They were in Lake Havasu and Lake Tahoe, because of navigatibility and interstate waters. (And most the guys/gals in those billets pretty much dropped contact with their detailers as they would just as soon be forgotten about and left in their assignments. ;-) And Searchlight was a radio station, Loran C, I believe. I think they are also on the Missouri and Mississippi. A small service, but with a lot of responsibility! Colby
