Found my dory!

I posted a while ago on the C-dory Wanted forum and thought I'd update to say: I found one! I was going to wait til I had it in my possession and could post a picture before announcing, but I got too excited!

It is a 2008 16 cruiser like new that I found in Port Orchard, WA. I was trying vainly to negotiate on a much more expensive one (but with many, many amenities that I'll need to buy myself now) in the same area when I suddenly saw this one pop up on Craigslist. It had literally just been listed so I called, emailed - to the ad and to the marina - and basically inundated them with messages saying "I want this! Call me!" The rest is history!

The details are boat, 40 horse Suzuki and trailer all bought new in 2008. The gentleman used them through 2010 and then parked the boat in his nice garage until deciding to sell it last week. The engine has been started and he is paying for oil changes, a new battery, and a check up. I'll try to post one of the photos they took. The interior is pristine.

The main downside for me is no kicker, but it is at KItsap Marina and I am talking to them about having a little 6 hp Suzuki installed there before they ship it up to me (I'm in Ketchikan, AK) I think a kicker is important for my area. I plan on being a fair weather fisherwoman, camper and adventurer, but nature often has other ideas! Plus I'd rather fish on the kicker.

Lastly: the name. It has a name, Lil' Bit, and I haven't decided if I want to change it. I checked through the C-brats names and found two Little Bits, but none that were Lil' Bit. That surprised me; seemed like it would have been a popular name for the smaller boats. I do like it and I've always heard that changing a name on a boat was bad luck. I'm curious if any of you subscribe to that theory? I'm not really superstitious, but why push it?

I'll look up picture posting instructions on here and get back with a photo.

Congratulations Jackie! I'd suggest if you haven't already that you check out the thread currently on this site titled: "Suzuki owners-question". You might find it helpful, particularly if you're not personally handy with outboard maintenance. It could help inform your choice of kickers as well. Cheers! Mike

Congratulations. You need to send a PM to TyBoo or DaNag (2nd and3rd on the member list), who are moderators to get a photo album

Agree that in AK a kicker is always advisable.

Thataway, thanks for the info; I'll do that.

Westward, I had been following that thread on the internal anodes. The engine only shows 10 hrs 38 minutes on the counter. The anodes would deteriorate in the saltwater, right? I did wonder about them, but would sitting in a garage for years affect them?

Their Suzuki mechanic did an oil change and checked it over and said there was nothing else he'd recommend right now - it's running great. I momentarily thought about asking about the anodes, but decided I'd try to find them when it got here and see what they looked like. There are a few other improvements I'll have my mechanic do when it shows up and I'll be sure to talk to him about them. Then I can watch and see what he does if I haven't found them! Sometimes a small town is really nice!

Congratulations!! :gift :gift :love

I took a few spins on a friend's 16 Cruiser some years ago, and it was such a fun boat :thup

I bet you can't wait!

You are right, Sunbeam, it's hard to wait. Especially when I look out the window and see beautiful water like in your photos. We have had some great days here lately. One of my co-workers caught two keeper kings, three shakers, and an accidental halibut this weekend. It was like a little fishing pole through the heart not to be in the water! Soon though, and I have plenty of chores to do in the meantime.

Jackie

Congrats on finding the right boat! Yes, you did fine on posting the photo... and we'll be looking forward to a lot more!

Best wishes,
Jim

Congrats on your 'new to you' boat. I took a ride on a 16 when one visited Comox. I do remember it being fun.
As for changing the boat name. I don't believe in all that mariner superstition.

Toast Neptune when crossing the equater.
Never go to sea on a Friday.
Never sail with a woman onboard.
Never change a boat name.

What a load of nonsense! When I bought my boat it's name was JC/DC. This stood for the previous couples initials who owned it. That was the first thing I changed when I became the new owner. So go ahead and change your name if you want to. No bolt of lightening is going to strike you.

Martin.

Congratulations! The hunt is so much fun, but the finding is sweeter.
Have fun and post lots of pics.
We are in Deer Harbor in the San Juan Islands presently, beautiful sunny Spring weather and so quiet!

Bridma...I never even heard those superstitions, except the name change. I don't know that I'll ever be crossing the equator, but I'm all for toasting, so that's ok. I happen to have Friday's off because my school keeps weird hours, and I'm a woman, so I'm going to break those two all the time! The big superstition here is not taking a banana on board. I've seen captains get very upset over that!

I actually like the name Lil Bit, and now that I see there aren't an abundance of them I might keep it. If I change it will be to 'Zing' which just has personal meaning to me, and the advantage of being pretty unique as far as I can tell.

Hi Jackie,

Congrats on the sweet 16. That looks really nice.

I'm with Martin and a bunch of the "others". Name the boat what you want and whenever you want. Just enjoy.

Here is a link to the album pix of how I did the name change, (Kind of a how to) that worked so far -- 9 years, and holding.

Looks like you have a nice one on the way. Hope it gets in soon.

It's nice that you like Li'l Bit - and it does seem a great name for a 16; but Zing is really neat! And unique. Yet easy to say and spell, which is a good thing. Heck, people will be calling you on the VHF just so they can say "Zing, Zing, Zing!"

If you decide to change the name, the gods must be appeased

*Expunge Old Name

Oh mighty and great ruler of the seas and oceans, to whom all ships and we who venture upon your vast domain are required to pay homage, implore you in your graciousness to expunge for all time from your records and recollection the name (enter former name) which has ceased to be an entity in your kingdom. As proof thereof, we submit this ingot bearing her name to be corrupted through your powers and forever be purged from the sea.

(At this point, the prepared metal tag is dropped from the bow of the boat into the sea.)

“In grateful acknowledgment of your munificence and dispensation, we offer these libations to your majesty and your court.

(Pour at least half of the bottle of Champagne into the sea from East to West. The remainder may be passed among your guests.)”

*Christening

“Oh Poseidon, mighty and great ruler of the seas and oceans, to whom all ships and we who venture upon your vast domain are required to pay homage, implore you in your graciousness to take unto your records and recollection this worthy vessel hereafter and for all time known as (new name), guarding her with your mighty arm and trident and ensuring her of safe and rapid passage throughout her journeys within your realm.

“In appreciation of your munificence, dispensation and in honor of your greatness, we offer these libations to your majesty and your court.

(At this point, one bottle of Champagne, less one glass for the master and one glass for the mate are poured into the sea from West to East.)”

*Appease the gods of the winds:

“Oh mighty rulers of the winds, through whose power our frail vessels traverse the wild and faceless deep, we implore you to grant this worthy vessel (enter new name) the benefits and pleasures of your bounty, ensuring us of your gentle ministration according to our needs.”

• Facing north, pour a generous libation of Champagne into a Champagne flute and fling to the North as you intone:

“Great Boreas, exalted ruler of the North Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your frigid breath.”

• Facing west, pour the same amount of Champagne and fling to the West while intoning:

“Great Zephyrus, exalted ruler of the West Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your wild breath.”

• Facing east, repeat and fling to the East:

“Great Eurus, exalted ruler of the East Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your mighty breath.”

• Facing south, repeat, flinging to the South:

“Great Notus, exalted ruler of the South Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavors, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your scalding breath"

Congratulations on your 16 ! April 1st made my 3yr anniversary for mine the "Ocklawaha Queen". Try to learn soon how light your boat is, example, step from dock on to your boat, notice how the boat leans down pretty good when you step on to the edge. The first 16 I tested I was allowed to use for a month, and I used the hell out of it. It had no trim tabs or fin attached to the lower unit of the outboad emgine. Trim tabs are little fins that control the left to right trim of the boat, and the fin that attaches the the lower unit of the outboard pulls the bow up and down. The boat being so light this control devices will dramaticly effect the performance of your light 16. Put this info I just gave some where because it makes the little boat handel like a bigger boat. Your weight alone will make the boat lean to the side you sit on, and the bow with out the big fin on the engine will rise up and make the boat ride rough in choppy water, when you force the bow down with the engine fin the bow will come down and the sharp bow will easily cut thru the chop without banging on each wave. I think the 16 is a Swiss knife, very simple and efficent, I have decided that it is a back pack with an outboard engine. Also learn how to use the library of data on this sight its free and its all C Dory stuff. All the best to you and your new craft :love

Thanks for all the good wishes. The boat is set to ship from Seattle next Wednesday, barring unexpected events. Friday at the latest. I should be on the water in two weekends!

I'll take a (non-binding, advisory only) vote of the family to see if we want to change the name. You are right, Sunbeam, that Zing would be fun to say and I'm expecting it to bring exactly that to my life. But I'm okay with Lil Bit for a while. Clearly you had no choice but to change your boat name, Harvey; either that or change your own to 'Jim'!

Ferg, that is quite a lengthy ceremony and it will require at least three bottles of champagne, most of which gets tossed to the sea! Of course, Cooks brand is cheap and ensuring my safety is priceless. If I change the name, we are just about a crazy enough crew to go through the whole ceremony right at the dock. I'll be sure to post a video

jimicliff, you are right about the wealth of information here. I have been following the permatrim discussions and had already decided I need one of those. That and the rode locker that is described in Oldgrowth's photo album. (He has a lot of fabulous alterations in there!) Those are the first two upgrades I'll do myself. I want to spend some time on her, then come up with a list of things I'd like my mechanic to do; trim tabs just went to the top. I've spent the last few years wiring, and re-wiring things in my current boat. What I've taken from the experience is that I'm not very good at it, or they wouldn't need re-wiring!

Thanks again for being so welcoming!

Jackie

Hi Jackie. Absolutely cool...You have a shipping date now. You can make like the Beatles and sing "It Won't be Long Now" or somebody

Not that I'm saying you should, but many of the C-Dory names incorporateed the letter "C" in the name. Like mine, SleepyC, or C-Cakes, E fishing C, etc. (You can go through the boat name list and obviously see that they are not all C's of course, too).

Just an idea here, C-Zing . As in the opportunity, or a play on Sea Zing.

BoatUS.com has a boat name section. Fun to look through.

The fun begins.
